CBB DFS Picks: DraftKings + FanDuel Core Plays | Jan. 29

Studs Tier

Luka Garza ($10,000) — The front-runner for player of the year, Garza enters a dream spot against an Illinois team in a game totaled at 162.5 points. Illinois is the one-point favorite, but Iowa ranks third overall in offensive efficiency. Garza’s dominant usage consists of a 25.1% shot rate and 21.4% rebounding rate on the year. Illinois ranks 25th in interior defense, but Garza scores from all over the court. The biggest concern with Garza is the remaining salary. This particular slate doesn’t provide much value. While Garza easily projects as the highest-salary player, they somewhat rely on an outlier performance from rotational players on this slate.

Jordan Goodwin ($9,000) –– Returning to action from an extended COVID-19 stoppage, Saint Louis dropped their most recent game to Saint John’s. In that contest Goodwin disappointed despite recording a double-double. Finishing with 11 points and 11 boards, Goodwin’s price actually dropped heading into tonight’s slate. With Richmond’s defense ranking 185th in defensive efficiency, this looks like the get-right spot Goodwin needs. On the year his 19.5% usage rate is elite. Buying low on Goodwin makes plenty of sense tonight.

Ayo Dosunmu ($7,700) — Playing in a similar situation to Goodwin, Dosunmu has disappointed DFS owners of late. While Dosunmu hasn’t hit 40 DraftKings points in the month of January, he shot back up over 30 in two of his last three contests. Similarly, Dosunmu’s recent rates show incredible involvement in Illinois’ offense. Dosunmu has a 28.7% shot rate, a 13.7% rebound rate, and a 25% assist rate in Illinois’s last three games. Iowa also struggles to defend the perimeter, ranking 227th in defense behind the arc. With Dosunmu’s price falling and a slate-leading 81.75 implied team total, he is top target on tonight’s slate.

Mid-Priced Tier

Jacob Gilyard ($6,400) — Another extreme buy-low situation, Gilyard has seen his price fall after a slow start to the season. Gilyard has played at least 37 minutes in three straight games for Richmond with a 16.4% usage rate on the season. Gilyard hasn’t scored double-digit points in back-to-back games, but he averaged 12.7 points last year. Importantly, Saint Louis to defend opponents behind the arc. They rank 221st in three-point defense. Gilyard ranks only behind Blake Francis in 3-point attempts for Richmond this season. Also playing every minute, Gilyard provides an affordable attachment to a solid game environment.

Hasahn French ($6,500) — For those looking for a cheaper attachment to Saint Louis, look no further than French. Battling foul trouble to start the year, French has now played at least 31 minutes in back-to-back games. French also benefits from an incredible matchup against Richmond’s 307th-ranked interior defense. While less used than Javonte Perkins ($6,300), French still has a 14% shot rate and 16% rebound rate across Saint Louis’ last three games. Conversely, Perkins relies purely on his 21.7% shot rate. Providing more consistent play and drawing the superior matchup, French offers GPP-winning upside on DraftKings.

Tevin Brewer ($6,200) — While FIU enters the slate with the lowest implied team total, recent injuries could potentially open some value. FIU has played without the services of Radshad Davis and Eric Lovett over the last few weeks. Their statuses have yet to be updated, but they look likely to miss another game here. In their stead, Brewer has played at least 32 minutes in three straight games for FIU. In that span, he has a 16% shot rate, an 11.6% rebounding rate and a 36.6% assist rate. While the implied team total renders Brewer a better play in GPPs, upside is there for a potential spot on CBB DFS rosters.

Value Tier

Jhery Matos ($5,500) — Matos stands out as a consistent player with an emerging role for Charlotte. Charlotte enters this contest as 6.5-point favorites over FIU, and Matos benefits from FIU ranking 245th in interior defense. He played at least 37 minutes in each of Charlotte’s last three games. On the year he has a 15.9% shot rate, a 15.6% rebounding, rate and a 20.6% assist rate, giving him steady production across statistical categories. Expect Matos to be popular, but his usage warrants a roster spot across formats.

Nathan Cayo ($5,000) — With little value on the DraftKings’ main slate, Cayo stands out as a reliable play against Sant Louis. Cayo certainly draws the teeth of a Saint Louis defense ranked 26th in defensive efficiency. However, he is one of the cheapest players with 30-minute upside. Cayo played at least 30 minutes in two straight games, providing a 12.4% usage rate. Cayo scored double-digit points in each of his last two, providing path to a ceiling score as well. Ultimately, without many alternatives, Cayo warrants consideration as a potential punt CBB DFS pick on tonight’s slate.

Connor McCaffery ($4,100) — Iowa enters this contest with a major question mark in C.J. Fredrick. Fredrick suffered an injury in Iowa’s most recent game and enters this contest with the questionable tag. With Fredrick limited to 13 minutes, McCaffery stepped up to play 30 minutes for Iowa. McCaffery has a 12.3% usage rate over the course of the year, but 30-minute upside is hard to find in this pricing tier. On those 30 minutes, McCaffrey scored 5 points and recorded 4 assists. While he doesn’t provide much of a ceiling, a steady McCaffrey score at a low price could access Garza’s ceiling and a GPP-winning score.
