College Basketball Betting Breakdown Saturday Feb. 15

Its the All Star break in the NBA, but we still have a gigantic Saturday of basketball in the college ranks. There are a 100+ games to breakdown and there are some big time matchups that will have an effect on the seeds come March Madness.  Just taking a look at the top games we have 14th ranked West Virginia travels to Baylor tomorrow,  while Maryland and Michigan State also face off in two of the biggest games on the schedule.

With so many games we are going to have a bunch of potential plays in the sports betting world, and its never a bad idea to get some info on teams we will be using in our brackets next month. This article is going to breakdown a few matchups that I think have some value and could make for good bets on this big time slate.

CBB Games Against the Spread

12:30 EST Dayton at Massachusetts +15 , O/U 145

First game up is out of the A10 as Dayton travels to Amherst to take on UMass. So far this season there haven’t been many teams as impressive as Dayton, who are 22-2 and on pace to get a top seed come tourney time. A lot of people are drawing similarities between this team and the Delonte West / Jameer Nelson St Joes team that was a #1 seed and was a National title contender. Dayton has one of the best offenses in the country and come into the game having won 13 straight. Obi Toppin is a name to remember as he leads the Flyers and is going to be a matchup nightmare for any opponent.

On the other side UMass isn’t relevant in the national picture and is building for the future. They are 10-14 on the season, but they have been more competitive of late and do have some positives to take despite the down year. The biggest building block for the future is freshman center Tre Mitchell who comes in averaging 16 points 6 boards and is the leader of this team. He absolutely has to stay out of foul trouble and needs to at least hold his own inside if the Minutemen have any chance to hang in this game. UMass is coming off a solid 69-67 home win against George Mason and will be looking for a similar effort in this spot despite the step up in competition.

On paper this is a mismatch and in reality UMass is going to have their hands full even in their gym. UMass and Dayton met already with the Flyers cruising at home winning 88-60 due to dominating the boards and shooting over 50% from the field. This game is a 15 point spread and Dayton hasn’t been nearly as effective away from home which is common amongst all teams. UMass will have trouble slowing Dayton’s 2nd ranked offense per Kenpom, but I also think they will have some success of their own offensively and can hang around in this game with Mitchell leading the way.

My Pick: Massachusetts +15

7:30 EST DePaul at Creighton -9 , O/U 146.5

Big east matchup here with DePaul traveling out to Omaha to take on the Blue Jays of Creighton. DePaul has had a decent year, but after a quality start they are probably disappointed to be sitting at 13-10 on the season. Furthermore the Blue Demons are just 1-10 in the conference which shows just how bad they have been of late. We last saw DePaul against Georgetown where they once again came up short 76-72 and that stretches their losing streak to six consecutive games. DePaul relies on a top 50 defense and doesn’t mind getting up and down pace wise as they are 70th in the country per Kenpom. They are led by a duo of 15 point scorers in Charlie Moore and Paul Reed who are both going to need to have huge games to steal a win on the road here.

Creighton is having another solid season and they are 19-6 on the season. They will be looking to grab a top 4 seed come tourney time and they cannot afford loses like this at home. Creighton is an elite offensive team in the country and comes into the game averaging 77 points per game which is 26th in the entire country. They have only lost one home game on the season and the environment will add to the challenge for DePaul in this spot.

The weak link for Creighton is defensively where they are average at best and that is where opponents have taken advantage of them throughout the season. Per Kenpom Creighton is 6th in offensive efficiency, but drop all the way down to 104th when talking about the defensive side of the ball. They do not force a lot of turnovers and come tourney time this is an area to watch when charting how far Creighton can go. In this matchup they will have to contain both Moore on the outside and Reed in the frontcourt and that could cause some problems for the Blue Jays defense.

Overall this game features an elite offense in Creighton at home against a struggling DePaul team who also doesn’t mind getting up and down. To me this screams up tempo and I think both teams will not mind racking up points and trying to outscore each other. For DePaul that is their best shot against a better team in their home gym and for Creighton they do not mind that type of style as they play it basically all the time. With the over under sitting at a reasonable 146.5 I will grab the over and hope that this stays close enough throughout where we can see both teams rack up points and soar over this total.

My Pick: Over 146.5
