NCAAB March Madness: Picks, Odds & Trends

No. 15 Oral Roberts vs. No. 7 Florida

The game that has me most interested is No. 15 Oral Roberts trying to keep the run going against No. 7 Florida. Vegas thinks that is unlikely, with Florida an 8.5-point favorite, but I think the Eagles can keep this run going for several reasons.

Oral Roberts shocked the world by taking down No. 2 Ohio State in the first round, largely because they turned the ball over just six times. They also took 35 three-pointers, so we know they want to launch from outside, but weren’t that effective, shooting just 31% from behind the arc. Overall they shot just 35% and even missed a few free throws despite being the nation’s top free-throw-shooting team. As crazy as it sounds, Oral Roberts left many points on the table.

The leading scorer in the country, Max Abmas, poured in 29, while Kevin Obanor had 30. Their shooting will keep them in games, and as we saw against Ohio State, they can still win games when the 3 isn’t landing at a high clip. Normally they shoot 38.8% from the outside, which is 10th best in the country, and Florida will have their hands full trying to stop these guys.

Speaking of Florida, they managed to pull out a tough overtime game against Virginia Tech in the first round. They shot an impressive 56% from the field and overcame a sloppy 18-turnover effort to hold off the Hokies. Tre Mann had a solid 14 points, but against Oral Roberts I believe Florida will need to be sharper with the ball to advance. One other area of concern is fouling, as Florida is 259th in the country in fouls per game at over 18. As I mentioned earlier, Oral Roberts doesn’t miss from the line often, as they shoot over 80% as a team.

It is always tough for a low seed like Oral Roberts to keep the run going since they are not sneaking up on anyone and will be getting another tough opponent. However, this team has the right formula, as they have the leading scorer in the country and multiple guys who are dangerous 3-point shooters. I thought Florida was fortunate to beat Virginia Tech in the opening round, and this game could easily come down to the wire. Giving Oral Roberts 8.5 points is more than enough for me to take a position here, and the No. 15 seed is live to survive and advance once again.
