CFB DFS Picks: Bowl Weekend 1 for DraftKings FanDuel Daily Fantasy Lineups

Tomorrow is the first Saturday of bowl season and we have a six-game CFB DFS slate to breakdown. These aren’t the most glamorous teams, but it’s still a nice blend of a lot of conferences and teams from all different angles. We have one heavy favorite with Appalachian State and then a string of competitive games that could go either way. It’s also a bunch of teams that we haven’t seen on many slates so far this season, so that will present new opportunities and challenges. As I always mention, make sure keep an eye on injuries and playing statuses as bowl season can provide some curveballs with who is playing.

This article is going to highlight some of the big names on the slate and breakdown some of the things to watch as we get another CFB DFS week kicked off. Make sure to also check out the Betting Breakdown article which breaks down a few of the bowl games in depth and also talks about betting lines that are worth looking into.

** Make sure to monitor news close to lock as a lot of news can break late in CFB DFS. Sometimes there is nothing we can do, but many other times you will be at an advantage if you can swap off someone late when others miss the news **

Quarterback

Shane Buechele, SMU – 7.7k DraftKings, 10.5k FanDuel

It is no surprise that Buechele is on my radar as SMU is the top offense on this slate and he is the quarterback of that machine. They seemingly score 40 every game and this isn’t like a normal CFB DFS slate where we have Jalen Hurts and Trevor Lawrence up top so there are fewer options to choose from. Buechele isn’t a prolific runner, but the touchdown equity for every main weapon on SMU gives them a high ceiling when they are expected to rack up so many scores.

The spread is competitive against Florida Atlantic with SMU a three-point favorite in a game with a 68.5 over/under. Without rushing upside, it can be a little scary paying all the way up, but Buechele has shown he still has a ceiling that we can target when he gets going. He has three games of 400-plus yards through the air and this is another perfect spot for him to have that kind of output in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Shai Werts, Georgia Southern – 6.5k DraftKings, 7.9k FanDuel

For those of you who haven’t seen much Georgia Southern football this year (and that is most of you reading this), the first thing you need to know is that they run the triple option. Basically, throws are few and far between and they rely heavily on a ground game, which controls the clock and the possessions. I will say it is not as extreme as Army or Navy who sometimes don’t throw, but Werts isn’t going to be finding the 300-yard bonus anytime soon.

Still, Werts comes into this game with nine touchdowns through the air and zero picks, and he is a pseudo running back in their option offense. He averages almost 70 yards on the ground per game and has had 12-plus carries in five straight games. Liberty, who Georgia Southern is playing, ranks 105th in rushing yards allowed per attempt so this is a perfect matchup Werts. I don’t mind taking the shot with Werts here as he is live in my mind to find the end zone on the ground and threaten the 100-yard bonus against the Flames defense.

Also Considering – Layne Hatcher

Running Backs

Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State – 7.4k DraftKings, 10k FanDuel

I mentioned earlier that the Appalachian State-UAB bowl game is expected to be lopsided with Appalachian State being a 17-point favorite. The mountaineers are 12-1 on the season and won the Sun Belt in convincing fashion against a quality Louisiana-Lafayette team. They have experience up and down the roster with quarterback Zac Thomas and their backfield, which is led by Evans.

With Appalachian State being a heavy favorite, you have to imagine they will be running the ball early and often and Evans is going to lead that attack. He is probably the most likely to score on the entire slate as he has 11 touchdowns in the last four games. He is catching the ball in the red zone which isn’t reliable production, but is still another avenue where he can contribute. You are going to want some exposure to this running game and if you have the salary, Evans is an ideal way to do that.

Anthony Jones, Florida International – 5.5k DraftKings, 7.9k FanDuel

We have the Camelia Bowl on Saturday with Florida International a 2.5-point underdog against Arkansas State. This game doesn’t have a lot of intrigue, but since we only have six games on the schedule it cannot be ignored from a CFB DFS perspective. Neither team is especially high-powered, but the opposing defenses add some appeal to these offensive weapons.

Jones is a senior tailback who had some explosive games throughout this 2019 season. He is getting double-digit carries each week and comes into the game with 11 total touchdowns on the season. It is not a number that jump off the page, but this is one of the better matchups you can draw in terms of rushing defense. Arkansas State is 111th in rushing yards allowed per attempt and that should be how Florida International tries to attack. With not a ton of glaring value on this slate, I don’t mind looking to Jones in that mid-range running back group and hope that Florida International controls this one on the ground.

Wide Receivers

Antonio Gandy-Golden, Liberty – 7.5k DraftKings, 8.6k FanDuel

Most people haven’t seen Liberty and honestly, you aren’t missing much, but Gandy-Golden is worth the price of admission. He is someone we could and should see on Sundays and he is the focal point of the Flames offense. He is force-fed targets and comes into this game with an impressive 74-1333-9 stat line on the year. Georgia Southern will do their best to limit him, but they do not have anyone in this secondary who will be up to that challenge.

Georgia Southern likes to control tempo with their running game, but when the defense is on the field, they struggle. They rank 97th in passing yards allowed per attempt and Liberty should be throwing throughout this game. Gandy-Golden isn’t as expensive as someone like Omar Bayless, who is also a fantastic play, so you have options in terms of how much you want to spend at wide receiver. With Gandy-Golden, we have the clear No. 1 target for Liberty and he gets the matchup we want for any top-end receiver.

DeAngelo Antoine, Florida Atlantic – 5.6k DraftKings, 7.4k FanDuel

Despite a huge implied total it is hard to peg production for Florida Atlantic. Lane Kiffin isn’t coaching and they have a number of pass catchers that contribute in this offense. The tight end is a serious weapon as Harrison Bryant is a legit NFL prospect, but he has a lower range of outcomes than  Antoine.

I wouldn’t fault you for going to Bryant, or both if you use the Florida Atlantic quarterback, but Antoine has me interested with his ability to break a slate. His floor is terrible for a member of an offense this prolific, but he also has four games north of 25 fantasy points, including a 55-point explosion against lowly Wagner. He makes for a great tournament play and a way to get exposure to Florida Atlantic.

**MAJOR UPDATE – Both Harrison Bryant and DeAngelo Antoine are expected to sit for the game. Bryant is ill while Antoine is part of the handful of FAU suspensions. Make sure to monitor this as we get closer to lock as FAU will have cheap WR’s  playing major roles **

Also Considering – John Hightower
