College Football Betting: Stanford vs. Cal | Nov. 27

One of the many great things about Thanksgiving is that we get football basically every day of the week. After a pair of NFL games on Turkey Day, we turn to Friday for a bunch of college football games getting underway. This will lead us into a weekend of CFB and NFL, but before we turn that page we have a bunch of games to break down.
My favorite bet on this college football Friday slate is the Stanford – Cal rivalry, which has produced some of the most memorable plays in college football history. This year both teams are 0-2 and looking to find their first win of what looks to be a rough season. Stanford is a 2-point road favorite, so this game is expected to be competitive throughout. I am going to the other side with California, and I will forgo the 2 points and take the +110 on the moneyline.
Stanford is known for their defense, but this 2020 version certainly breaks tradition. This season they’ve had trouble getting off the field on third down and have been abysmal at stopping the run. They rank 110th in rushing yards allowed per attempt at 5.2, and their offense isn’t built to win in shootout environments. In their first two games, Stanford only has one touchdown passing, so if they fall behind, this could be another long day for the Cardinal.
On the other side, California is 0-2 and coming off a tough 31-27 loss at Oregon State. The Golden Bears are equally weak against the run, but they should have opportunities to move the ball against the Stanford defense. Quarterback Chase Garbers will strongly benefit from this matchup and has a handful of weapons on the outside that can break this game open. Cal also gets their first home game of the season, which is still useful despite the lack of fans. They’ve dealt with some COVID issues this season but look to have the core intact for this matchup, and I believe they have the advantage skill-wise.
With only two games for each team, there are more questions than answers, but that can be good for identifying some soft lines. I believe Cal should be the favorite at home against a Stanford team that still is searching for an identity, as they aren’t the top-end defense and rushing attack that they have been in years past. California is a much more balanced offense, and we saw flashes of what could be a quality team last week at Oregon State. In this matchup they have the advantage on both sides of the ball, so I will gladly take plus money on the Golden Bears at home in this rivalry game.
