CFB Matchup: Notre Dame vs. Syracuse

Gigantic mismatch alert — Notre Dame is nearly a five-touchdown favorite at home against Syracuse. The Irish are still unbeaten and need to simply avoid sleepwalking here to set up a probable rematch with the Clemson Tigers. They are firmly in the College Football Playoff discussion, and quarterback Ian Book is getting some Heisman Trophy chatter as the leader of this 9-0 Notre Dame squad. The Irish will lean on the run in this spot and basically can name their score against a team like Syracuse.

On the other side, Syracuse has been dismal all season and head into South Bend at just 1-9. They have had injuries to the quarterback position, and through 10 games they only have 14 touchdowns in the passing game. The lack of offense has put a ton of strain on this defense. Against Notre Dame’s offensive line, it is going to be a challenge to even stay competitive. Their team total is 10 points, and it is hard to imagine them keeping this one even remotely close.

CFB Matchup: Indiana vs. Wisconsin

It’s a rare sight to see Indiana relevant in football, but the Hoosiers have already played several marquee games in 2020. They scored a game-winning 2-point conversion earlier in the year against Penn State and managed to give Ohio State a quality test in Columbus. Most of that was thanks to quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Unfortunately, the team leader went down last week with a torn ACL. Indiana will now turn to backup Jack Tuttle to keep this teams 5-1 record intact. The good news is Tuttle was a significant recruit, originally for Utah, and he has several playmakers on the outside to make his job easier.

On the other side, Wisconsin has dealt with COVID-19 issues all season and has been able to play just three games so far. The Badgers are 2-1, with wins over Illinois and Michigan before dropping their last game to Northwestern. Quarterback Graham Mertz has regressed after his big debut. While the matchup against Indiana isn’t overly daunting, it’s still no cakewalk. With just three games to break down, it is reasonable to wonder how good this team is, let alone if they are worthy of being a two-touchdown favorite.

CFB Matchup: Nebraska vs. Purdue

We have another Big Ten matchup here with Nebraska heading to West Lafayette to take on the Boilermakers. Vegas expects this one to stay close, with Purdue a slight 2.5-point favorite at home and both offenses are expected to have success. Purdue is 2-3 on the season and losers of three straight, so this is a key game to stop the bleeding. Keep an eye on who is expected to be under center; quarterback Aidan O’Connell has missed the last two games and remains questionable to return. If he sits, it will be Jack Plummer getting the start. This team has several skill position weapons, led by All-American Rondale Moore, who has played in the last two contests following a late debut.

Nebraska is another team that really needs a win at 1-4 on the season. In their last game, a 26-20 loss to Iowa, they played well but were unable to do much through the passing game. The quarterback position remains an issue. The Cornhuskers turned to Luke McCaffrey, who has dual-threat ability, but it seems like he and Adrian Martinez are both going to see the field. This team really has no identity. It is difficult to know where they are after suffering another tough defeat last time out. Purdue should be able to attack a Cornhusker secondary that is allowing 7.7 yards per attempt.

CFB Best Bet: Purdue -2.5

CFB Matchup: Ball State vs. Central Michigan

We head to the MAC for a big game in the West Division as 3-1 Ball State takes on 3-1 Central Michigan. Vegas expects this game to be another very close contest, with just a 1-point spread in Central Michigan’s favor.

Ball State lost their opener to Miami (OH) but has since rattled off three wins of 7 points or less. It seems like most games in this conference come down to the fourth quarter, and that shouldn’t change here. The Cardinals don’t have a prolific passing attack; they have just six touchdowns through the air in their first four games. That could be a problem if they fall behind against this opponent. However, if there is a team to exploit in the passing game, it is Central Michigan. The Chippewas give up 10.2 yards per pass attempt, which is 129th out of 130 teams in the country.

Central Michigan is coming off a 31-23 win against Eastern Michigan, and they rely on their offense to keep them in games. This season they’ve scored 30, 40, 44 and 31 points. With the problems in their secondary, that trend will have to continue. This team has a strong rushing attack, averaging 5.3 yards per rush, which is 19th best in the country. I expect them to try to control this game with their running backs, keeping their defense off the field as much as possible. Their starting quarterback, Daniel Richardson, is out for this game, which will put even more pressure on the backfield to handle the workload. I think the Chippewas do enough on the ground to grab a major conference win despite the backup quarterback.

CFB Best Bet: Central Michigan -1
