What is Overlay in Daily Fantasy Sports?

Overlay is the difference between a DFS contest’s total prize pool and the entry fees in the contest.  While DFS sites normally take a management fee (or rake) in a contest, the reverse is true in situations involving overlay, where sites take a loss (or a “negative management fee”) and are literally giving away their own money.

Back in 2014-15, overlay was commonly used as a marketing technique by sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel to draw in new players, because playing in such contests was profitable for the average player.  At the time it was an invaluable tools for pros, such as our own Awesemo, to quickly build their bankroll.  Predictably, however, sites dramatically scaled back overlay in the years since, because giving away free money isn’t exactly a viable long-term business model.  The only overlay you’ll see these days is the result of sites overestimating demand for their contests and is typically in the 1-3% range.

Basically, overlay is a great way to take advantage of lower fees and build your bankroll – sometimes, you can even GAIN money on your contest entry IF the overlay is large enough.
