DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Pitchers of the Day 4/19

On the MLB DFS Early Bird, Adam Scherer & EMac review pitching options for the August 6th, including Clayton Kershaw and Zach Greinke

Pitching leaves a lot to be desired tonight on this 5-game slate as there is one guy (for me) that is above the rest and then a bunch of average to below-average SP2 options. If you’re looking for some dialogue on each game for tonight’s slate, check out the MLB Strategy Video that we recorded this morning. Awesemo will give his thoughts on the pitchers below later this afternoon, so make sure to check back here before lock!

Zack Greinke ($10,600 DK/$8,900 FD)

Greinke is my top option on the slate and it’s not really that close. He’s posted a Swing-Strike % over 14% in each of his first three starts, and now he gets a matchup against one of the most impatient teams in the MLB in the Giants. Greinke has struck out righties at a 28.9% clip since the start of 2017, and he should see 5 of them in the Giants lineup tonight. Ranked in the top-30 in Whiffs/Swing rate on the year and at home in a good matchup, Greinke is far and away the top option in all formats on both sites for me.

Chase Anderson ($9,500 DK/$7,800 FD)

On the MLB Strategy Video this morning, I wasn’t crazy about Anderson’s price or matchup, and I’m still not, but you can pretty much fit in whoever you want on DK tonight. I expect Anderson to pitch decently here against a Marlins team with very little power, and as a -183 favorite with his team expected to put up a handful of runs, Anderson has a great chance at a win, and there aren’t many pitchers we can say that about tonight. The swing-and-miss stuff hasn’t been there for Anderson, but the Marlins have the 2nd-lowest hard-hit rate (26.8%) and lowest ISO (.081) in the MLB.

Nick Tropeano ($5,400 DK/$6,300 FD)

This is not a great spot for Tropeano against the hottest team in the MLB, but at this price (on DK especially), he’s got my attention for GPPs. In his first start of the season after missing all of 2017, he struck out 6 in 6.2 innings while posting a 10.8% Swinging-Strike rate. His slider and changeup both got a decent amount of whiff in start number 1, and while I don’t expect him to be perfect here, I think he’s viable in tournaments as a 2nd starting pitcher on DK that allows you to get in all the top bats.

Awesemo’s Notes
I agree with Jake that Greinke is the top option on tonight’s slate. Chase Anderson has been a pretty good fantasy pitcher since last season, but he doesn’t have a great track record going deep in games. For that reason I think he’s a bit overpriced on DraftKings. Tropeano I think is a great value tonight, and the cheap price will give you a contrarian roster construction for a GPP.
