DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Pitchers, Thursday 5/10

Jake Hari

DraftKings DFS MLB picks like Mike Mikolas for September 1 MLB DFS based on projections and ownership from the number 1 DFS player.

Below you’ll find 3 spotlight pitchers that I (Tommienation1) am looking at tonight for tournaments. Awesemo will update this article with his thoughts later in the day, so make sure to check back before lock!

Miles Mikolas ($10,200 DK/$8,500 FD)

Mikolas’s price on DK has skyrocketed, as his previous high was $8,000 in his last start, but the matchup and his recent performance dictates it. The Padres are amongst the league’s worst in K%, OBP, ISO, and wRC+ against righties, and Mikolas has the stuff to mow them down. His 37.6% O-Swing% ranks 3rd in the entire MLB ahead of Chris Sale and Noah Syndergaard. The quality of contact against him is also very encouraging, as Mikolas has allowed few hard-hit balls, with an 87.2 MPH Average Exit Velocity to lefties and 84.3 MPH to righties. In my eyes, he’s worth the $10,200 on DK with the lack of top options on this slate.

Tyler Mahle ($7,600 DK/$7,200 FD)

Mahle has been impressive over his last 3 starts, going at least 6 innings against the Braves, Twins, and Marlins. He’s surprisingly in the top-50 in Whiffs/Swing% while posting over 25% K-rates against both righties and lefties this year. The matchup against the Dodgers is far from perfect, but it is a good pitching park and Mahle does look like he has the stuff to have a solid outing here. With not much to like in the mid-tier tonight, Mahle is a decent GPP option that has a little bit of upside here if he can get ahead of these Dodgers.

Caleb Smith ($7,300 DK/$7,600 FD)

If Tyler Mahle doesn’t do it for you, can I interest you in some Caleb Smith? The Marlins southpaw is rocking a 12.4 Swinging-Strike% rate with a 31.4 O-Swing% this season while having 3 different pitches ranking in the top-25 in Whiffs/Swing%. He’s clearly got the talent to succeed in a less-than-stellar matchup like the one he has tonight against the Braves, who have a league-low 16.7% K-rate against lefties on the season. I assume he will be low-owned once again, so I want to be over the field in ownership on Smith tonight.
