Early Slate

Homer Bailey ($7,100 DraftKings, $7,600 FanDuel, $34 Yahoo)

The Homer Bailey experience is often a wild ride, but getting a pitcher that can miss bats against one of the worst teams versus righties at this price is worth the risk in GPPs. On the season, Toronto has the league’s 2nd-worst wRC+ versus righties, as well as the 3rd-highest K% against them while showing little ability to get runners on base (.291 OBP). We should see Bailey garner ownership at this price on two-pitcher sites, but with the bats he allows you to fit in on this slate, he makes for one of the better punt plays on the early slate.

Main Slate

Justin Verlander ($11,500 DraftKings, $11,500 FanDuel, $62 Yahoo)

Verlander comes into tonight as the top option on the main slate by a good margin, and if you aren’t crazy about some of the bats in Coors field, he makes for an excellent option in GPP formats. A likely lefty-heavy lineup for the Mariners should play right into Verlander’s strengths, as he has fanned a whopping 37.5% of lefties on the season with a minuscule o.66 WHIP against them. There is no pitcher on tonight’s six-gamer that comes close to Verlander in terms of projecting raw points, and because we’ve got two solid pitchers in Coors, he becomes even more viable as the expensive bats aren’t especially appealing.

Drew Pomeranz ($6,400 DraftKings, $6,600 FanDuel, $27 Yahoo)

Pomeranz will look to build off his most recent start in which he struck out 11 in just five innings versus the Rockies, and while this matchup against the Diamondbacks is not as soft, it is certainly one in which he can have success. The strikeout matchup is not great against the D-Backs from an overall team standpoint (18.9% vs. LHP), but all of Walker, Peralta, Joseph, Greinke, and Dyson are striking out around or above league-average since the start of 2018 versus lefty pitching, and Pomeranz has been especially good versus lefties, striking them out at 28.6% on the year. The Sp2 options on the main slate aren’t great, but Pomeranz’ ability to miss bats and park factor make him one of the best options in his price range.
