Early-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Miami Marlins vs. RHP Vince Velasquez – TBD implied runs

This will be part of the main slate on DraftKings where they are including the first game in the Pittsburgh – Cincinnati, Oakland – Seattle and St. Louis – Milwaukee doubleheaders, which are seven-inning games.

Choosing the Marlins makes sense as they are the one game that is scheduled for nine innings among the early options. I will be comfortable going to both sides of this one on DraftKings. Velasquez is priced fairly at $6,300 in a pitcher’s park, and he has thrown 90 pitches in two of his last three appearances.

Over his last 570 righty/lefty matchups, Velasquez has ceded a 1.68 HR/9, 10.0 BB% and .230 ISO. Corey Dickerson leading off is a great option, as he has nice power upside. Matt Joyce provides some salary relief from the cleanup spot but is always a pinch-hit risk if we see a lefty out of the bullpen. Jesus Aguilar excels in righty/righty matchups with a .227 ISO over the last two seasons. Finally Starling Marte is at a premium on DraftKings, but he is the best hitter in the lineup.

Mid Afternoon-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Atlanta Braves at RHP Jorge Lopez – 5.7 implied runs

The Braves will be circling the Beltway from Washington to Baltimore after hanging 24 runs on the Nationals while taking three of four in their series. Lopez was claimed off of waivers after the Royals designated him for assignment last month. He had a nondescript eight seasons in the minors for the Brewers and Royals, with a few stints in The Show culminating in 213.1 innings, a 5.95 ERA, 1.486 WHIP and 1.5 HR/9.

With the return of Ozzie Albies, albeit as the nine-hole hitter, Atlanta has a stacked lineup. At the top of course is the trio to target with Freddie Freeman, Marcell Ozuna and Ronald Acuna Jr. While he has seen his price tag rise dramatically, Travis d’Arnaud is very much in play on sites that require us to roster a backstop. For differentiation we have Dansby Swanson with a wildly varying price tag depending on your site of choice and the boom-or-bust bat of Adam Duvall. Plus, as a bonus, Nick Markakis is very familiar with the batter’s eye in Camden Yards.

Late-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Chicago White Sox vs. RHP Jose Berrios – 4.2 implied runs

When in doubt, roll the White Sox out. While we prefer the Southsiders against lefties, this is a limited slate. The current collection of batsmen have a 110 wRC+, meaning they score 10% more efficiently against righties than the average team.

We know that Berrios likes to challenge hitters, but that also leaves him vulnerable to giving up crooked numbers. On DraftKings the hitting salaries are obscene, which should help keep the masses at bay. On Yahoo they are appropriate, and even FanDuel has priced up Tim Anderson and Jose Abreu. Of course this will just push gamers towards Yasmani Grandal and Edwin Encarnacion.

That aforementioned quartet make up the priority targets, but we can also look to Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert and Nomar Mazara, who are more than capable of sending a fastball out of the yard. On this two-game slate, even if you are going with Berrios as your pitcher, do not be shy about taking a couple hitters against him.
