T.J. Hockenson is coming off of a breakout season in his second year in which he finished top five at his position in all formats. The question at hand is, will Hockenson continue on this upward spiral in his career, or will Jared Goff destroy what could be a top-five tight end season? Let’s answer this question with a deep dive into TJ Hockenson‘s 2020 season and project how he could finish the 2021 fantasy football season, and where he might fall in the fantasy football rankings for Yahoo, ESPN and CBS leagues.

Hockenson’s Production in 2020
Last season Hockenson looked to expand on his lackluster rookie season. He started the season off strong, and unlike in his rookie season, he never looked back. He had 67 receptions on 101 targets for 723 yards and six touchdowns. All those marks were top 10 among tight ends.
Lions Offseason Changes
The Lions may have had the most moves on offense in the NFL this offseason, starting with trading for Goff. With Matthew Stafford leaving, the quarterback position has certainly been diminished. While it is a step down, Goff’s is good enough to get the ball to his best pass catchers. Speaking of receivers, Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones are gone and were replaced with Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman. They also added rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown. All told, it is pretty evident that Hockenson is the best receiver on the team.

Entering 2021 fantasy football drafts, it is safe to say that there is a big three at the tight end position: Travis Kelce, Darren Waller and George Kittle. After that the door is wide open for who could be the fourth tight end of the board. The best comparable situation to Hockenson’s this season is Waller who has also clearly been the best receiving target on his team. And like Waller, Hockenson’s situation means this should be a top-five tight end season based exclusively upon volume. Even those who are nervous about Goff’s quarterback play should not let that detract from Hockenson as a draft target. If the volume were not enough of an argument, also consider how bad the Lions’ defense will be, causing the offense to throw late in games. That should be the recipe to success for an elite fantasy tight end in 2021.
