2020 Fantasy Football Rankings: Awesemo’s Top Three Tight Ends

1. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs

Kelce had yet another stellar season in 2019, catching 97 of 136 targets for 1,229 yards and five touchdowns. His consistency has been off the charts and is what makes him worthy of a high draft pick. He’s received at least 100 targets in five straight seasons and recorded at least 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in four straight campaigns. If there was an area in which he did disappoint last year, it was the five touchdowns that he had considering he had 18 over the previous two seasons combined. However, he went crazy in that department during the playoffs, including catching three touchdowns in the Divisional Round against the Texans.

Heading into 2020, Kelce is once again primed to have a big season. He has one of the best, if not the best, quarterback in the league throwing him passes in Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs did not add anyone significant at wide receiver over the summer, so there is no reason to believe that Kelce will see a decline in targets. He’s projected to score 212.4 fantasy points and is the 12th-ranked player, regardless of position. He’s the No. 1 option in Awesemo’s fantasy football rankings.

2. George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

Kittle missed two games last year, but his overall numbers were still exceptional. As one of the focal points of the 49ers’ offense, he hauled in 85 of 107 targets for 1,053 yards and five touchdowns. When he played all 16 games in 2018, he caught 88 of 136 targets and moved himself into the discussion as one of the top players at his position.

Heading into 2020, he checks in right behind Kelce with a projected 208.5 fantasy points. The 49ers might have to rely on him even more heavily if Deebo Samuel (foot) isn’t ready to start the season. They did add some talent at wide receiver by selecting Brandon Aiyuk in the first round, but the depth chart behind him and Samuel isn’t exactly great. The 49ers could also receive improved play from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who led them to the Super Bowl in what was just his first full season as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Expect Kittle to be busy early and often. He’s the No. 2 option in Awesemo’s fantasy football rankings.

3. Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles

There is a significant drop off between the top two players in our rankings and Ertz, who checks in at 59th overall with a projected 157 fantasy points. Known as one of the best tight ends in the league, Ertz actually stepped up his game in 2018 by setting career highs in receptions (116) and receiving yards (1,163). He did come back down to Earth some in 2019, but his 88 catches for 916 yards and six touchdowns were still excellent in the grand scheme of things.

The good thing about Ertz is that the Eagles have him the field to catch passes, not pass protect. He ran a route on 94.4% of his snaps last season, which is more than Kelce (88.9%) and Kittle (80.7%). That’s mainly because they don’t have much talent at wide receiver. They drafted Jalen Reagor and are hoping for a healthy campaign from DeSean Jackson, but they are still anything but strong at the position. Jackson has played a total of 15 games across the last two seasons and Alshon Jeffery has played 13 games or fewer in four of the last five seasons. While it’s not likely that he will replicate his 2018 production, he should at least threaten for 1,000 receiving yards once again if he can stay healthy. He’s the No. 3 option in Awesemo’s fantasy football rankings.
