Fantasy Football Rankings: Strength of Schedule Playoff Targets

1. David Montgomery, Chicago Bears

There was plenty of hype surrounding Montgomery last season after he was selected in the third round by the Bears. He was extremely productive at Iowa State, posting at least 1,100 rushing yards and at least 11 rushing touchdowns in both 2017 and 2018. He was also a viable weapon in the passing game, catching a combined 48 passes during that span. However, his 2019 season didn’t go particularly well as part of an anemic Bears’ offense. He averaged only 3.7 yards per carry, finishing with 889 yards on 242 attempts. He also compiled just six rushing touchdowns and 25 receptions on 35 targets.

Entering the 2020 season, we have Montgomery projected to average 11.83 fantasy points per game for the season, overall, in what could be an improved Bears offense. They brought in Nick Foles to compete with Mitchell Trubisky at quarterback and are hoping for an improved campaign from wide receiver Anthony Miller, who has battled shoulder injuries in his young career. Montgomery could be even more productive in Weeks 15 and 16 with matchups against the Vikings and Jaguars, leaving him with a projected average of 12.36 fantasy points per contest. That’s an increase of 4.5% compared to his overall projection per game for the season. David Montgomery is Awesemo’s #1 fantasy football rankings strength of schedule benefactor.

2. Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers

McCaffrey is our top-ranked running back for the season after posting a monster 2019 campaign. He racked up over 1,000 yards on both the ground and in the passing game, and he accumulated 19 total touchdowns. The Panthers did make a change at quarterback by bringing in Teddy Bridgewater, but their offense should still be heavily built around McCaffrey and their excellent rushing attack.

As the No. 1 running back, McCaffrey is projected to average 22.27 fantasy points per game for the season. However, matchups against the Packers and Washington bump up his projections to 23.11 fantasy points per game in Weeks 15 and 16, which is an increase of 3.79%. Both of those teams ranked inside the bottom 10 in the league last year in terms of rushing yards allowed per game, and Washington allowed the sixth-most points per game. Christian McCaffrey is Awesemo’s #2 fantasy football rankings strength of schedule benefactor.

3. Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers

After receiving limited opportunities during the first two seasons of his career, Jones was finally given the lion’s share of the work out of the Packers’ backfield last season. He didn’t disappoint, rushing for 1,084 yards on 236 carries. Even more impressive is that he totaled a whopping 16 rushing touchdowns. He wasn’t just a one-dimensional running back either, catching 49 of 68 targets for 474 yards and three touchdowns.

With Jones and Jamaal Williams in the fold, the Packers surprisingly spent a second-round pick in the draft on running back A.J. Dillion. However, that might have been more of a selection with the long term in mind since Jones can become a free agent after this season. Jones should still be plenty busy, leaving him with a projection of 14.55 fantasy points per game for the season overall. He also receives a bump of 3.25% to a projected 15.02 fantasy points per contest based on his Week 15 and 16 matchups against the Panthers and Titans, respectively. It’s noteworthy that both of those game will be played at home, which is where Jones scored 10 of his 16 rushing touchdowns in 2019. Aaron Jones is Awesemo’s #3 fantasy football rankings strength of schedule benefactor.
