Working the Waiver Wire: Top Week 4 Pickups including Justin Jefferson and Carlos Hyde

Whether you won or lost in your fantasy league in Week 3, the good news was that we didn’t see a ton of injuries compared to the bloodbath that came in Week 2. We don’t have nearly as many top options to target on the waiver wire, as a result, but here are still some players to consider if you need reinforcements who are still available in the majority of Yahoo leagues.

Fantasy Football: Week 4 Waiver Wire Pickups

Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings (70% available)

In need of a boost in their passing game, the Vikings turned to their first-round pick Jefferson to have his first big game. He had just six targets through their first two games, but he received nine targets against the Titans in Week 3, turning them into seven catches for 175 yards and a touchdown. With Stefon Diggs no longer in town, Jefferson is set up to be their second-best wide receiver behind Adam Thielen, which leaves him as someone to target for Week 4 and beyond.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 1 (10% – 15% of FAAB budget)

Carlos Hyde, Seattle Seahawks (82% available)

The key with Hyde will be the status of Chris Carson, who suffered a knee sprain against the Cowboys and might be forced to miss at least one game. If he’s unable to play, Hyde should step in as the team’s starting running back. He showed he had plenty left in the tank last season, rushing for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns with the Texans. He’d be set up for an excellent matchup against the Dolphins, who have allowed the eighth-most rushing yards per game in the league.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 2 (10% – 15% of FAAB budget)

Scott Miller, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (84 percent available)

With so much talent around him, opposing defenses aren’t exactly setting up their game plan around stopping Miller. As a result, he’s posted at least 73 receiving yards in two of their three games. He could see even more action this week depending on the status of Chris Godwin, who left their game against the Broncos on Sunday with a hamstring injury and appears to at least be in danger of missing Week 4, if not longer.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 3 (5% – 10% of FAAB budget)

Jeff Wilson, San Francisco 49ers (78% available)

The 49ers might be the unluckiest team in the NFL when it comes to injuries. They are especially thin at running back with both Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman dealing with knee injuries. That forced Jerick McKinnon into a starting role against the Giants, and he played well, posting 77 total yards and a touchdown. Wilson was also busy with 69 total yards and two touchdowns. McKinnon had missed both of the last two seasons, so expect the 49ers to continue to give Wilson added work in an effort to keep McKinnon healthy.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 4 (5% – 10% of FAAB budget)

Dalton Schultz, Dallas Cowboys (69 percent available)

Schultz exploded in his first game filling in for Blake Jarwin (knee), catching nine of 10 targets for 88 yards and a touchdown against the Falcons in Week 2. He followed that up with four catches on six targets for 48 yards against the Seahawks on Sunday. Both games were shootouts, so that only helped Schultz in terms of his workload. With that being said, he should have a large enough role within the offense moving forward to at least be in the discussion of top-12 tight ends on a weekly basis.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 5 (5% of FAAB budget)

Mo Alie-Cox, Indianapolis Colts (91 percent available)

Has Alie-Cox passed Jack Doyle on the Colts’ depth chart at tight end? Doyle was unable to take the field in Week 2, which propelled Alie-Cox to catch five of six targets for 111 yards against the Vikings. Doyle was active against the Jets in Week 3, but he didn’t receive a single target. Meanwhile, Alie-Cox caught all three of his targets for 50 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Philip Rivers has a history of working well with tight ends, so if Alie-Cox continues to receive the bulk of the playing time at the position, he could be a valuable fantasy asset moving forward.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 6 (5% of FAAB budget)

Rex Burkhead, New England Patriots (89 percent available)

The Patriots played without James White for the second straight week as he continues to deal with a tragic car accident involving his parents. There is currently no timetable for his return, so there’s a chance he will be out for their Week 4 matchup against the Chiefs, which could be a shootout. Burkhead has stepped up in his absence and was especially productive against the Raiders on Sunday with 98 total yards and three touchdowns. The Patriots backfield creates uncertainty when it comes to fantasy football, but the current state of affairs does make Burkhead a viable option.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 7 (5% of FAAB budget)

Cole Beasley, Buffalo Bills (91 percent available)

The addition of Diggs prior to the start of the season put Beasley third on the Bills’ wide receiver depth chart behind him and John Brown. Still, he has 15 catches on 20 targets for 228 yards. He came through with 100 receiving yards in Week 3 in part because Brown left with a calf injury. With the potential that he sits out Week 4, Beasley could provide value in PPR leagues and in deeper formats.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 8 (2% of FAAB budget)

Nick Foles, Chicago Bears (97 percent available)

Well, it finally happened. The Bears have benched Mitchell Trubisky. After a slow start on Sunday against the Falcons, he was sent to the sidelines and replaced by Foles. The move proved to be wise since Foles threw three touchdowns passes and led a comeback win. Foles has already been named the starter for Week 4, and he should hold onto the job moving forward unless he struggles. If you play in a 10- or 12-team league, Foles is someone who is probably best left on the waiver wire. However, if you play in a deep league or in a superflex format, Foles is at least worth a look.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 9 (1% of FAAB budget)

Greg Ward, Philadelphia Eagles (99 percent available)

Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Eagles are running out of healthy pass catchers with Alshon Jeffery (foot), Jalen Reagor (thumb) and DeSean Jackson (hamstring) all dealing with injuries. To make matters worse, tight end Dallas Goedert (ankle) could also miss multiple games after suffering an injury in Week 3. Ward was busy in that contest with few others left to compete with him for targets, finishing with eight catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. He’ll face the banged-up 49ers defense in Week 4, so he might be worth a flier if you’re thin at wide receiver.

Week 4 Waiver Wire Priority: 10 (1% of FAAB budget)
