Michael Carter is getting surprisingly little fantasy hype, at least relative to typical rookie running backs, despite positive reviews from training camp. Is it because he is a bad player or because of pure ignorance from the masses? We will do a deep dive into Carter’s collegiate production and discuss his potential finish in 2021 fantasy football rankings.
2021 Fantasy Football Player Previews: Michael Carter
Carter’s Production in 2020
Carter was in a solid scenario to succeed at North Carolina. Though he was stuck in a two-headed running back committee, Carter and Javonte Williams were both deserving of significant playing time; Williams ended up being a second-round pick this year, and Carter went in the fourth. Last season Carter played in 11 games and carried 156 for 1,245 yards (8 per carry). He added 25 receptions on 30 targets for 267 yards and 11 total touchdowns. Again, that level of production came while splitting touches.
Carter’s Outlook in 2021
To truly project Carter, remember that Adam Gase is no longer the Jets’ head coach. Now Robert Saleh is in charge, and while it is his first head coaching job in the NFL, he is going to get the best out of his players. Carter is again in a committee, there will be opportunity for him to break free. Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and Lamical Perine have been career backups, so there is a path to a starting role for Carter. While it may take a few weeks, he can easily be a top-24 back if he becomes New York’s RB1. He is going outside of the top 30 running backs in a majority of drafts, so there is potential for substantial value here.
