With Michael Thomas OUT, What Saints WRs Do We Target in Fantasy Football Drafts?

For the second time this week, there has been breaking news about a severe injury to one of the more important players in fantasy football. Reports are that New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas is expected to miss the start of the season. Thomas needed surgery to repair ligaments inside of his ankle in June. A typical timetable for this kind of surgery would put him out for around four months. Since this surgery occurred in June his timetable to return should be somewhere in October. That begs the question, who will become the Saints’ No. 1 wide receiver in fantasy football draft rankings?

How to Replace Michael Thomas in Fantasy Football Drafts

When to Draft Michael Thomas

The NFL kicks off on Sept. 9, so most likely Thomas will miss at least four games, which is going to significantly move his average draft position (ADP). Without a definitive timetable, it would be unwise to draft him anywhere until the eighth round, and even that may be a little ambitious. The opportunity for Thomas to have an insane comeback season after a lackluster 2020 performance is now out the window.

Is Tre’Quan Smith the Guy?

The question now that one could come to is who to draft in the Saints receiving core. There is really only one name that is on the roster right now that is fully worth drafting: Tre’Quan Smith. Smith is a decently sized wide receiver (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) who has shown flashes since being drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft. Last season he had 50 targets for 34 receptions, 448 yards receiving and four total touchdowns. His biggest game from last season came against the Lions in week 4, in which he dusted Desmond Trufant for four targets, four receptions, 54 yards and two touchdowns. While the Saints should add another wide receiver, Smith is the flier from the New Orleans.
