Sermon’s College Production
From a statistical standpoint, Sermon’s college numbers were mediocre. His senior season he played in eight games, rushing 116 times for 870 yards and catching 12 passes for 95 yards. The reason for his lackluster numbers was Ohio State splitting his touches with Master Teague. However, in the right situation, Sermon showed what he was capable of, and he could succeed in the NFL. Luckily for him, he landed in what could only be described as the perfect situation.
Sermon’s Fantasy Outlook in 2021
There is a clear pecking order in the 49ers backfield. Raheem Mostert is first, followed by Sermon and then Wayne Gallman. They also have Jeff Wilson Jr, but he is going to be missing a bunch of time this season. While Sermon is certainly behind Mostert, the 49ers are the perfect system for backups to succeed due to a strong rushing attack that could be stronger if Trey Lance takes over. Head coach Kyle Shanahan also likes to utilize the hot-hand approach, so there is a scenario where Mostert could lose steam and Sermon takes over as the lead back. Plus, Mostert has had a tendency to get hurt. His laundry list of injuries in 2020 included an MCL sprain and two high-ankle sprains. He also dealt with a knee injury this preseason. While Sermon is not overly athletic, being in the 49ers’ system with a chance of becoming the lead back makes his value undeniable.
