DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Hitters, Thursday 5/3

Josh Engleman

MLB picks: Our FanDuel MLB DFS Cheatsheets column highlights value plays in each price range for fantasy baseball lineups for July 21.

The following Spotlight Hitters were selected by’s Director of Content Josh Engleman. Please check back later for notes/additional picks from Awesemo himself.

J.D. Martinez
FD: $4400
DK: $5300

On a night with only four games, J.D. Martinez stands out as an excellent play regardless of slate size. Mike Minor is in for a load of trouble, as the Red Sox right handed bats should be difficult to deal with. Martinez should be slotted into the cleanup spot, providing multiple opportunities for RBI. Martinez isn’t the only Red Sox that I looked at for this spot. Check out the Spotlight Stacks if you want to know more.

Brian Dozier
FD: $3500
DK: $4300

This one has less to do with Dozier and more to do with his circumstances. Dozier should be batting lead-off tonight against the hittable Reynaldo Lopez. Lopez sports a 4.95 xFIP in his career versus right handed batters. I’ll take my chances here with Dozier looking to get some extra plate appearances at the top of the order.

Mike Trout
FD: $5400
DK: $5900

Sure, it’s a big price tag. Sometimes, that’s what you have to do. Trout gets to do battle with Chris Tillman, who has a 4.75 xFIP over the past three years against righties. In that same time, Tillman has given up homeruns at a rate 30% higher than average. I’ll happily take the best player in baseball in this situation.

Awesemo’s Notes
I agree with Josh on all three plays tonight, except I don’t like Trout on FanDuel because of the outrageous price tag! As a value play, I like Welington Castillo on DK and Pedro Alvarez on FD, if he’s in the lineup.
