DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Pitchers, Friday 8/24

Jake Hari

Josh Engleman's daily MLB DFS column highlighting his favorite pitchers on DraftKings, FanDUel and Yahoo for fantasy baseball lineups.

The following Spotlight Pitchers were selected by writer Jake Hari. For more analysis on the slate, check out Awesemo’s Rankings and Ownership Projections.

Mike Foltynewicz ($11,100 DK/$10,500 FD)

Foltynewicz has the highest priced of any pitcher tonight on DraftKings, but he also comes with arguably the highest upside of any pitcher as well. The Marlins don’t pack much of a punch offensively, as they have just a 68 wRC+ and league-low .110 ISO over the last month, and looking at the hitters in this lineup, Folty has the advantage over each one of them. Even better for Foltynewicz, the Marlins will likely field 6 righties tonight (including the pitcher), and he’s striking out over 28% of them on the year. The hefty price makes him a fun “pay up to be contrarian” GPP play on DraftKings with a lot of upside.

Rich Hill ($9,800 DK/$8,800 FD)

Hill has a great case himself to be considered the top pitcher on the slate as the Padres have a total hovering around 3 and he comes in as a -234 favorite. He will be regarded as the safest option in all formats tonight, but looking at his last start where he threw 115 pitches, Hill doesn’t lack upside if the Dodgers allow him to go over 100 pitches. He’s been much better against righties (27.7% K-rate, 3.49 xFIP) which is great news because the Padres projected lineup has 7 of them, plus the pitcher spot. Hill is a (deservingly) chalky option in tournaments tonight on this tough pitching slate.

Gio Gonzalez ($6,400 DK/$7,500 FD)

Gonzalez comes in as one of the only guys priced down here that has real upside tonight, as he’ll get a lackluster Mets lineup that has a fair share of strikeouts in it, especially if Conforto and Bruce are in it. He certainly hasn’t had a good run as of late, but the Mets have the 3rd-worst wRC+ (80) on the year against lefties with the 2nd-highest K-rate. As a -144 favorite, if he can avoid an early blow up, he’s got a solid floor as he’s one of the few pitchers in the low-tier that can go 100+ pitches tonight.
