DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Pitchers, Thursday 8/2

Jake Hari

On the MLB DFS Early Bird, Adam Scherer & EMac review pitching options for the August 6th, including Clayton Kershaw and Zach Greinke

The following Spotlight Pitchers were selected by writer Jake Hari. For more analysis on the slate, check out Awesemo’s Rankings and Ownership Projections.

Zack Greinke ($11,200 DK/$11,000 FD)

Greinke will be up against the Giants in his home park, where they have just a 3.3 run implied total. The Giants have been subpar against righties all year, posting a strikeout rate near 24% with a .143 ISO and 94 wRC+, and have oddly been worse on the road. Greinke has been fantastic against righties in terms of getting strikeouts (27.5%) and limiting baserunners (1.04 WHIP), and he should see 6 of them this evening. He may not have the crazy upside like a Max Scherzer, but for $1,800 cheaper, I’ll gladly take a shot on Greinke at likely lower ownership.

Nick Pivetta ($8,500 DK/$8,300 FD)

Pivetta should get healthy ownership tonight on DK at this price, especially coming off a 12 strikeout performance in Cincinnati in his last outing. The Marlins are a similar team to the Reds in that they don’t have as many strikeouts in lineup as you’d think, but they have much less power (.126 ISO against RHP). Against right-handed hitting, Pivetta has been dominant, posting a K-rate over 30%, a near 50% Ground Ball rate, and a 2.79 xFIP, so a Marlins lineup that has 5 righties should play right into his hands. I’m expecting Pivetta to be one of the highest-owned players on the slate, but he’s easily the best option in his range for me.

Pablo Lopez ($5,700 DK/$5,500 FD)

Lopez, not Trevor Richards, will start against the Phillies tonight after the postponement yesterday in Atlanta. Lopez has been pretty solid in some tough matchups in 5 starts this year, 2 of which were against the Nationals, and this will be a much better matchup in terms of strikeouts. The Phillies are striking out over 25% against right-handed pitchers this year, and Lopez has shown the ability to miss bats with a fantastic 38% O-Swing and a Swinging-Strike rate of 10.7%. At $5,700, Lopez is a good gamble on a tough pitching slate, as he’ll also allow you to get leverage off of some Phillies bats that we expect to be popular.
