Masahiro Tanaka ($8,600 DK/$8,800 FD)

Tanaka is coming off an impressive performance in a tough spot on the road against the Indians, as he allowed 2 runs on 6.1 innings while racking up 5 strikeouts. Just as importantly, though, he was able to post one of his highest O-Swing rates of the season (43.5%) as well as a double-digit Swinging-Strike rate on 77 pitches. Tonight’s matchup will be much friendlier in Tampa Bay versus a Rays team that strikes out above league average against righties, as well as a bottom-5 ISO against them on the year. For $8,600, Tanaka makes for a high-upside GPP play on DraftKings at a discount from his true talent.

Zack Wheeler ($7,700 DK/$9,000 FD)

Wheeler will likely be one of the most popular plays on the night in about as good of a spot as you can imagine, especially coming off a 7.2 IP 7 K performance against the Nationals, but it’s hard to argue against him as a great value. Wheeler has shown the ability to miss bats all season despite some up-and-down results, but his numbers against righties overall are solid, and he’s going to see at least 5 of them tonight, including the pitcher slot. It is also encouraging that the Mets have let him go past 100 pitches in each of his last 5 starts, getting up to 113 pitches in his last start before the All-Star Break, so he’s tough to get off of tonight on a slate that lacks depth at pitcher.

Felix Pena ($5,500 DK/$7,100 FD)

Pena is not going to have as long of a leash as many of the top guys on this slate, but for $5,500 on DK, I love him for tournaments. His slider has recorded the highest Whiffs/Swing% of any starting pitcher this year (min 100 pitches) at 57.1% with righties having an especially tough time tracking it. The Swinging-Strike rate for Pena looks very good as well, as he’s posted rates of 14.8%, 12.2%, 18.1%, 11.8%, 10.5%, and 16.2% over his last 6 outings. The strikeout matchup against the White Sox and the price is hard to ignore on a slate with Coors and many other expensive teams in great spots.
