Mookie Betts — OF — Los Angeles Dodgers
Betts carries an 11-game hitting streak into tonight’s game against the Rockies, who will start right-hander Antonio Senzatela. This has been a profitable matchup for Betts in the past, as he has already homered off him twice in his career. It typically does not matter who is pitching for the Rockies against Betts because he has destroyed their pitching collectively. In 46 plate appearances against Colorado this season Betts is slashing .385/.468/.692 with six doubles and two home runs.
According to Awesemo’s expert projections, Betts is the top-ranked hitter of the entire day. With the game taking place at Coors Field, the Dodgers have the day’s highest implied run total (6.3) by almost an entire run over the second-highest team (Astros, 5.5). Los Angeles is only one game behind the Giants for first place in the National League West and the top record in MLB. With only three games left against the Rockies this season, look for Betts and the Dodgers to have some added motivation in getting this win.
Jose Altuve — 2B — Houston Astros
Altuve has hit safely in each of his last eight games and in 13 of his last 14. Tonight’s matchup against the Angels and their left-handed starter Packy Naughton lends some optimism, as the Astros have the second-highest implied run total (5.5) on the slate. Naughton is having a rough go of it in September, with a 5.56 ERA in three starts. Altuve has never faced Naughton, but he has been exceptional against left-handed pitching in his MLB career. His .325/.382/.877 career slash numbers against southpaws are far off his slash against righties of .302/.352/.801. According to Awesemo’s expert projections, Altuve is the highest-ranked hitter among all non-Dodgers.
Jose Ramirez — 3B — Cleveland Indians
Ramirez takes aim against the Royals lefty Daniel Lynch. It has been a tough rookie season for Lynch, who has been touched up for a 5.34 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 59 innings. Once Lynch exits, Cleveland will look to take advantage of a Royals bullpen that has the fifth-highest ERA (5.59) over the last week. Ramirez has been strong in the final month of the season, slashing .300/.427/.500 with four home runs and 12 RBIs, and he scored seven runs over two games against the Yankees last week.
Surprisingly, the Indians have the third-highest implied run total (5.3) after getting a strong plus-0.5 boost from the open. That increase is the largest positive move for any team on the slate, and teams with large increases like that tend to go off for a lot of runs. Ramirez just had his six-game hitting streak snapped last night, so look for him to get another going on Tuesday.
