George Springer — OF — Toronto Blue Jays
Springer checks in as the top-ranked hitter on the Awesemo expert projections, making him the perfect player to buy low. Tonight’s matchup against Orioles right-hander Chris Ellis is a profitable one, as evidenced by the Blue Jays having the slate’s highest implied run total (5.8) by more than half a run. In addition, the Orioles bullpen has the highest ERA in baseball; after Ellis exits the game, it is all systems go for Toronto.
Springer is expected to return to the lineup after a three-day hiatus with a knee injury. Over the course of the season, Springer has hit for more power against right-handed pitching, with 13 of his 16 home runs coming against them. While injuries have played a big part in keeping his overall numbers down, Springer is ready to help the Blue Jays make a big run towards the postseason. Perhaps the hiatus is coming at the right time considering he went hitless in his last two games.
Whit Merrifield — 2B — Kansas City Royals
Merrifield and the Royals get a profitable matchup against Twins right-hander Griffin Jax, who has allowed at least four runs in each of his last four starts. Jax has struggled greatly this season, especially at home, with a 6.31 ERA in six appearances (three starts). In fact, Kansas City roughed him up pretty in their only matchup, recording eight hits and six runs over five innings.
If looking for a consistent stock moving upwards, Merrifield is the guy. Before going 0-for-5 in yesterday’s game, he hit safely in eight of his previous nine games. Merrifield has more doubles (6) and RBIs (14) against the Twins than any other team this season, so look for him to keep it rolling.
Daniel Vogelbach — 1B — Milwaukee Brewers
With the Brewers moving into the American League park for the weekend, Vogelbach will use the DH rule to his advantage. He usually comes in as a pinch-hitter, so this is an under-the-radar play. Vogelbach is an all-or-nothing player in that he is looking to crush a home run rather than take a conservative approach at the plate. However, that risk is viable with a player that will not cost much. According to Awesemo’s expert projections, Vogelbach has one of the best value rankings on the slate.
Indians right-hander Eli Morgan has been much worse at home this season, going 1-5 with a 7.53 ERA in eight starts. Morgan has allowed three home runs in his last 7.1 innings at Progressive Field. The Brewers are on their way to the postseason, so look for this to be another stepping towards success.
