Let’s focus on three players — one pitcher, one infielder and one outfielder — to slot into MLB DFS lineups for today’s Yahoo Cup and MLB Baller contests.

MLB DFS Pitcher: Max Scherzer — $49

Tonight’s 14-game main slate became 12 with the White Sox – Red Sox and Mets – Rockies games postponed due to inclement weather. That news takes ace Jacob deGrom off the board, leaving a rather scarce selection of remaining pitchers, especially for a slate of this size. So even though a bunch of that deGrom popularity will now flock towards Nationals ace Max Scherzer, he becomes a priority for tonight.

Scherzer has already been put through the gauntlet early this season, as he was forced to face potent Braves and Dodgers lineups in his first two outings. He performed admirably from a fantasy perspective, posting 23.5 and 22.4 Yahoo fantasy points in those games, respectively. He will now get a home matchup against a Diamondbacks team, which, despite teeing off on Patrick Corbin last night, does not pose nearly the power threat of his first two opponents.

That is a good thing for Scherzer, who has already given up four home runs on the young season. But having averaged well over 12 Ks/9 each of the past four seasons, he can still make up for solo shots with elite strikeout stuff. According to Awesemo’s Top Pitcher tool, Scherzer has the highest appearance rate of any pitcher in the projected optimal lineup. That makes Scherzer a sure-fire arm to spend up for on an otherwise sketchy pitching slate.

MLB DFS Infielder: Jose Ramirez — $21

With so many teams in action tonight — and now Coors Field no longer in consideration — there shouldn’t be one team that’s rostered at too high of a clip. And while there are some solid hitting situations for a number of offenses, keying in on the Indians visiting Great American Ballpark feels like a great place to be invested in. Despite losing the designated hitter on the road against a National League team, Awesemo’s Top Stack tool still projects them as the third-most likely team to finish in the winning lineup.

Even if not looking to stack up this team, Jose Ramirez makes an excellent one-off. He has three home runs on the young season — all from the left side of the plate — and now gets to face a below-average righty in Jeff Hoffman. Combining the ballpark with the pedigree of the Ramirez, who slashes .280/.353./.494 for his career, he makes for an elite bat to lock into MLB Yahoo Cup lineups.

MLB DFS Outfielder: David Dahl — $8

The outfield position is absolutely loaded top to bottom on this slate. And while investing in the likes of Mike Trout, Juan Soto and Joey Gallo is certainly a worthwhile proposition today, it is not possible to pay up for everyone. That’s why lefty David Dahl makes for an excellent source of savings that can help reach some of those other elite bats on this slate.

Dahl is off to a rather lackluster start in 2021. In 43 plate appearances, he’s hitting .209 with only three RBIs and no home runs. However, this could be a get-right spot for him and all the Rangers lefties versus Jorge Lopez, who is giving up a 37.5% HR/FB rate through two starts. Lopez has never posted a season above a 1.47 WHIP in his previous five seasons in the big leagues, and there seems to be no signs of that changing. That makes Dahl at only $8 one of the better value options available for MLB Yahoo Cup lineups tonight.

Eric Lindquist hails from Sioux Falls, South Dakota (yes, that’s the one with Mount Rushmore). A steady diet of three SportsCenters a day at an early age led to his obsession with sports, one that 30 years later is paying dividends for him as a successful DFS player and sports bettor. Despite over half a million dollars in net career earnings, he’s most passionate about helping others achieve their financial goals, an energy you can witness on the daily in his current role as a host and analyst at Stokastic. He’s a former Division I golfer at Iowa State, wishes he was a former Minnesota sports fan, and is a proud father to a 100-pound Bernese Mountain dog named Duke that wishes he could just eat people food instead of the crap he and his wife feed him on the daily.
