Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Keep in mind the playoffs are now at neutral sites with the Astros and Rays playing at Petco Park. The Braves and Dodgers are playing in Globe Life Park tonight.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. LHP Framber Valdez – 4.3 implied runs

Houston is clawing back after winning the last two elimination games of this series. They still need to win two more to overcome the Tampa Bay lead. Tonight should be a spirited matchup with southpaws going for each team. Valdez has been solid since July with a 3.25 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and only eight home runs allowed in 88.2 innings. In Game 1 of this series he allowed just two runs, one home run with eight baserunners and eight strikeouts.

In this matchup, I am most interested in some of the one-off power hitters in the hopes of corralling a home run or an extra-base hit with a runner in scoring position. The Rays have the ability to go very righty-heavy which gives us several options to choose from. Hunter Renfroe and Manuel Margot are of course interesting for both the platoon advantage and that they spent most of their career in Petco Park where tonight’s game is being played. Mike Zunino has plenty of power, which makes him an interesting pivot away from the more popular backstop options in Travis d’Arnaud and Will SmithAt the top of the lineup, we should see Mike Brosseau, Randy Arozarena and Yandy DiazThis trio will likely be the most popular options from the Rays, but that does not mean we should shy away from them.

It should be in the low-80s at first pitch on another glorious San Diego fall day for this 3 o’clock local start.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Bullpen Game – TBD implied runs

In a bit of a twist for this article, let’s focus more on the likely pitching in our nightcap. I can see looking to either side here as I suspect this is going to be a double bullpen game.

For the Braves, lefty Max Fried is the next up in the rotation, though his regular pitching day would be Saturday. Atlanta is likely to be content keeping him on that schedule, as they will be playing again tomorrow if they do not close out the Dodgers tonight. That leaves righty Josh Tomlin as the likely opener for a couple of innings before the rest of the relievers take over. A.J. Minter, Darren O’Day and Mark Melancon have not pitched in the last two games, so they are fresh. Jacob Webb went on Wednesday for 27 pitches for his only appearance in the last week. That gives Atlanta enough arms to get through this game before doubling up on Chris Martin, Tyler Matzek and Will Smith who pitched last night but had the prior day.

Atlanta Braves vs. RHP Dustin May – TBD implied runs

For the Dodgers, even though they have May listed as their starter, we should keep in mind that the has made just two appearances in October with 27 and 16 pitches thrown respectively. Even with using four relievers each of the last two days, Los Angeles still has Joe Kelly and Blake Treinen who have not pitched in over 72 hours. Additionally, Kenley Jansen, Pedro Baez and Alex Wood were not needed yesterday.

The strategy for players from this game will be to focus on those who are adjacent in the lineup for maximum synergy. My preference is to look for trios who have one or no batters going between them for maximum effect. Let position eligibility, pricing and projected popularity guide your preferences.
