I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find three tables, one each for DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

I could write this article every day for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t end up on the complete game shutout from Glenn Sparkman yesterday. Let’s hope today is more normal.

FanDuel MLB DFS Picks

I love Mike Clevinger days. Lucky for me, his price is perfect. I am a little nervous about left handed power, but the Tigers aren’t exactly a scary offense. It’s hard to find this much upside at $9400. I’ll have more Clevinger than any other pitcher, and it won’t be close. I would love to get some Gerrit Cole, but his price is prohibitive. Plus, a matchup with the Angels isn’t exactly high upside. If Trout sits again, Cole will gain appeal, but I just don’t think I want to target the Angels with Cole’s price.

It’s a terrible strikeout matchup against a quality offense. There are better spots to deploy Cole. I’ll save Robbie Ray for the DraftKings section, but he’s fine here. I just prefer Clevinger and Cole. If I need to pay down, I think Trevor Richards is the best option. The ballpark should help him with his right handed power problems, so I think he’s set up to have a potentially big day at $6400.

DraftKings MLB DFS Picks

For DraftKings, Clevinger is still my top arm, but my number two is the guy I wanted to wait on. Ray is only $7900 for reasons I can’t fathom. The strikeout stuff is massive, and we know the Rangers aren’t afraid to waive at the ball. As long as he can avoid the long ball to the righties, Ray should have a monster day. Without question, he’ll be my most exposed DK starter. I think Cole is in play a bit more here, since Chris Paddack and Domingo German are a tad overpriced.

The pool is just thinner at the top. If you need someone to pair with Cole (or Clevinger, I guess), minimum salary Jesse Chavez is viable. He has some real problems with power, but his stuff can carry a nice night at just $4000. There’s no reason he should be that cheap, so I expect to have lots of money leftover for bats.

Yahoo MLB DFS Picks

Yahoo’s pricing makes the most sense, save for Ray being $33. Cole is at the top, with Clevinger close behind. I still prefer Clevinger, but I think they are both far and away the best arms for the main slate. Those three guys will make up a large majority of the ownership in GPPs. If you want to get a bit different, I think you can pay down for Danny Duffy at $27. The park will help out a ton, as Duffy struggles with right handed power. He has a .193 xISO against RHH over the past two seasons. That’s scary. Lucky for Duffy, he only needs to get through Yoan Moncada and Jose Abreu. The White Sox are currently lacking in right handed power (amongst other things).

  1. Good morning Josh, unfortunately it looks like the pricing on DK is a. It off. It appears that your highlighted most exposed pitchers in Ray is priced at $10,100 and Clevinger is $9,900 on July 17. Looking forward to see if these price adjustments change your pitcher list!
