MLB DFS Picks Today: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks | Friday, April 29

Yahoo Stack of the Day: Houston Astros at Toronto Blue Jays — 4.2 implied runs

All eyes will be on the Coors Field game for the discounted Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies hitters in matchups against Antonio Senzatela and Hunter Green, respectively. Consider the Houston Astros in Toronto taking on the Blue Jays’ offseason signee Yusei Kikuchi as a pivot away from The Masses. Kikuchi is far from a greenhorn, as he spent eight years in Japan with the Seibu Lions before joining the Seattle Mariners in 2019. The Astros are quite familiar, having squared off against Kikuchi in the American League West for three years, and Yordan Alvarez, Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman, Aledmys Diaz and Yulieski Gurriel all have at least 17 at-bats against the soon-to-be 31-year-old southpaw. Target Chas McCormick if he is leading off, along with Kyle Tucker in the heart of the order, and round things out with Bregman, Alvarez, Gurriel and Diaz.

Late Slate: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. LHP Tyler Alexander — 5.1 implied runs

The Dodgers will be wildly popular on the late slate, and they also deserve strong consideration on the main slate as a countermove against the Coors Field crowd. Opposing pitcher Tyler Alexander tends to allow a lot of balls in play, and his 41.6% hard contact and 41.6% fly ball rates portend for some home runs in Los Angeles tonight.

Trea Turner, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Will Smith, Chris Taylor and Justin Turner all have logged isolated power metrics of .200 or higher over the last two seasons against southpaws. Then, of course, leadoff hitter Mookie Betts has a long career track record, including above-average power and walks against opposite-handed hurlers.

San Francisco is hosting old friend Aaron Sanchez and the Washington Nationals. Look to the Brandons (Belt and Crawford) as one-offs tonight, and working in Thairo Estrada or Wilmer Flores can create a nice secondary stack on both the late and main slates for those looking to avoid the Dodgers and Coors Field.

Spotlight Pitchers

Top MLB DFS Picks Target: RHP Frankie Montas vs. Cleveland Guardians — 3.0 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $51 | FanDuel $10,200 | DraftKings $8,100

Tonight Frankie Montas will be doing his best to keep the Guardians in check. It is going to be cool in Oakland, and this game has a minuscule 6.5 implied run total. In his last three starts, Montas has been sublime with just four earned runs across 19.2 innings, accompanied by 19 strikeouts and one home run allowed. Cleveland came out of the gates strong with a 7-5 record through its first dozen games. Since then, it has lost seven in a row, averaging a paltry 1.7 runs per game.

Secondary MLB DFS Picks Target: RHP Adam Wainwright vs. Arizona Diamondbacks — 3.3 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $49 | FanDuel $8,500 | DraftKings $9,400

The Arizona offense is relatively anemic, averaging just three runs per game despite having the 11th-most home runs in the league. Veteran Adam Wainwright does not have great strikeout stuff, but his curveball has one of the best in the league in three different decades. If Wainwright can continue limiting walks and power, he is a strong candidate for a quality start as well as a win. It is tricky to project fantasy points for those outcomes, but the Cardinals are nearly 2-to-1 favorites at home tonight.

Late Slate – MLB DFS Picks Target: LHP Alex Wood vs. Washington Nationals — 3.0 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $42 | FanDuel $9,500 | DraftKings $8,700

This will be the second straight start for Alex Wood against the Nationals. Last weekend in Washington he held them to just two runs across five innings with five strikeouts on the way to earning the win in a 5-2 victory. There is some recency risk when pitchers face hitters in consecutive starts, thought the Nats bats are not particularly scary. Wood has a nice ground ball lean (48.1%) with solid strikeout (26.1%) upside. Juan Soto, Josh Bell and the ageless Nelson Cruz are the only threatening hitters on tap for tonight.

Final MLB DFS Thoughts & Weather Notes for the Friday, April 29 Fantasy Baseball Slate

The Midwest is the trouble spot tonight, with games in Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis all having precipitation concerns to varying degrees. It seems that all of the regular DFS sites either forgot to look at the schedule and see that Cincinnati playing in Coors Field, or they chose to give the hitters a discount instead of a premium for playing in that ballpark tonight. Keep in mind that this iteration of the Reds is currently bottom three for runs scored, average, on-base percentage and slugging. They will be facing ground ball specialist Antonio Senzatela, who is an effective pitcher in his home park.
