I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find three tables, one each for DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. In addition to using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

Nathan Eovaldi

The end of the regular season is so weird that I’m starting with my favorite pay down option. Unless we get more information about how long Eovaldi will pitch, he should be the most owned player on DraftKings and it shouldn’t be close. Even with a pessimistic innings projection, Eovaldi ends up as the best point per dollar play on the slate. He’s projected similarly to a lot of the pitchers in the $7-8k range. To get him at $100 above the minimum is crazy. On his own, Eovadi unlocks everything you want to do with bats. He’s viable as a pay down arm on Yahoo as well, but $4100 on DraftKings is the clear best spot.

Walker Buehler

Buehler creates the perfect combo with Eovaldi. He’s the highest upside arm on the slate, although that excitement is mitigated a bit by his price. Even though the Dodgers will likely treat him with kid gloves as they head towards the playoffs, I think pitching in Oracle Park helps to offset that. I’m not worried about anything other than how long he pitches. Even in the worst possible park, Buehler is elite. He’s given up a .270 xwOBA in 2019. No one hits him. If we get six innings today, Buehler should come out smelling like roses. He’s my favorite pay up arm across all three sites.

Other Options

If Anthony Desclafani happens to get six or more righties, he’ll instantly become the best mid-tier option. His entire outlook is dictated by the left/right split in the Pirates lineup. In the same game, Steven Brault looks like another ultra-viable cheap arm on DraftKings. I’m a bit nervous about how much ownership I’ll have split between the two cheapest guys, but I see it as an unavoidable scenario. Jose Berrios is only $42 on Yahoo, which is a lot more appealing than his FanDuel/DraftKings prices.
