MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Hitters and Stacks, Thursday, May 27th

Yahoo Stack of the Day: St. Louis Cardinals at RHP Matt Peacock — 4.8 implied runs

Tonight the Chase Field roof is scheduled to be open with temperatures in the mid-90s for this 6:40 p.m. local start. Rookie Matthew Peacock was a reliever in college, but the Diamondbacks have converted him into a starter to make full use of his groundball skillset. This will be his third consecutive start, and while he should make it into the fifth inning, the lack of strikeouts and potential to implode make the Cardinals intriguing MLB DFS picks on all slates.

The primary target will be Paul Goldschmidt, who is by far the best hitter on the Cardinals and is quite familiar with the hitting environment tonight. Switch-hitters Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson are a nice one-two combination at the top of the order, as they nearly always put the ball in play. Nolan Arenado is not just a product of Coors Field, and he has been performing well with a .355 wOBA, .236 ISO and just a 13.5% strikeout rate in 171 same-handed matchups this season. Yadier Molina is always an option on sites that require a catcher, and gamers can even turn to the struggling Matt Carpenter for differentiation on the late slate.

Early Slate

Miami Marlins vs. RHP Spencer Howard — 3.8 implied runs

Ideally, this low-implied run total and the general reputation for the Marlins offense keep interest at bay. DraftKings did a nice job with the salaries for the key Marlins bats, while Yahoo left Cory Dickerson ($11) and Adam Duvall ($12) too cheap. FanDuel is always going to FanDuel, as evidenced by Dickerson’s $2,200 salary, which is only $200 from the site minimum.

Rookie Spencer Howard is getting some serious on-the-job training as he embarks on his career in The Show. With the pandemic curtailing the MiLB season, he made six starts in the majors. Prior to that, a sparse 30.2 innings at Double-A were his most in the minors. He made three relief appearances for Philadelphia this year before heading to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to get stretched out in order to join the rotation. While Howard has exhibited strikeout upside, like many youngsters he has issues with control and dealing with the power of major league hitters. The 73 lefties he has faced have tallied 2.45 HR/9 and an 11.0% walk rate, while 76 same-handed hitters have found things a little tougher with a 1.06 HR/9, though they still have a 10.5% walk rate.

Dickerson and Duvall are the best power options from Miami, with Dickerson getting the slight edge since he is a lefty. Jesus Aguilar has solid power against same-handed hitters, and he can also be used to form a power trio or as a one-off option with a little homer-hunting upside.

Late Slate

Seattle Mariners vs. LHP Kolby Allard — 4.3 implied runs

Tonight southpaw Kolby Allard will be making his first start of the season. While he is not fully stretched out, he has already had several outings in the 40- to 50-pitch range and his last eight appearances have gone multiple innings. With so many of the Rangers starters struggling or dinged up, manager Chris Woodward is turning to the bullpen for some relief tonight. The two freshest righties are Ian Kennedy and Josh Sborz, who have not pitched since Sunday, and then it is a slew of southpaws in the same boat. This will give Texas several different alternatives to turn to throughout the game. Though there is no official word at the time of this writing, righty Jordan Lyles could come in as the bulk reliever since this would be his regular turn in the rotation.

While there is going to be some precipitation tonight, keep in mind that T-Mobile Park has a retractable roof. However, the “car port” setup will not do much to ward off the game-time temperatures, which are slated to be in the mid-50s. The Mariners offense falls off a cliff after their first handful of hitters, but that is the group to target tonight. Kyle Seager more than holds his own against fellow lefties, with a .245 ISO in his last 277 same-handed matchups. Mitch Haniger hammers lefties, posting a .313 ISO in his last 113 plate appearances, and he already has 13 home runs; that has him on pace to smash his previous single season high of 26 back in 2018. Rookie Jarred Kelenic will be leading off and is the crown jewel of the Seattle farm system. Finally, gamers can roll with a full stack by including either Kyle Lewis or Ty France, depending on positional need.

Final Thoughts for the Thursday, May 27th MLB DFS Slate

Keep an eye on the White Sox game, as there are menacing weather conditions all night. As always, be mindful that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a home run play on Yahoo may be a below-average MLB DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
