I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

I understand that James Paxton is still working his way back, but I’m not sure it matters if he’s priced at $9400. I’m not worried about the Mets offense. This is simply about how deep Paxton can go in this game. From everything I’ve read, he’s close enough to 100% that I don’t see a need to make any tweaks. If I’m not going to Paxton, I’m firing up Patrick Corbin. The Nats are big favorites and the White Sox strike out more than average.

That’s really all I need to see. I prefer Corbin to Trevor Bauer, since Bauer’s matchup against the Reds is one of the worst from a strikeouts perspective. If I need to pay down, Mike Foltynewicz is the guy that stands out. Like Bauer, Foltynewicz has a difficult strikeout matchup. The difference is, Folty is just $7300. That’s worth the risk.

DraftKings

On DraftKings, the salaries are bit jumbled, which makes everything a bit more difficult. Chris Paddack is the most expensive pitcher on the slate. I like him, but he’s hard to prioritize over Corbin, Paxton and Bauer. I expected to have most of my pay-up ownership going to that trio. Folty works at $8500, but that’s kind of a no man’s land for salary. I’d rather drop all the way down to $7200 Jakob Junis. Junis is at home in a pitcher’s park against a Tigers team that is both bad and strikeout happy.

I’m going to end up with a ton of him. Trent Thornton is just a hair behind Junis, so if Junis ends up getting a ton of ownership, I think Thornton works as a pivot. You can also pay all the way down for Elieser Hernandez at $5000. The Cardinals are good. This fails more than it succeeds, but sometimes, you need salary savings and this is the easiest spot to grab it.

Yahoo!

Yahoo looks a lot like DraftKings. Paddack is at the top in salary, but he’s difficult to get to because of Corbin, Paxton and Bauer. Luis Castillo is trapped in-between these guys, which takes him completely off of my board. Junis and Thornton are both at $34, which makes them equally appealing. Pay attention to their ownership and the contests you are entered in. That should dictate your decision process. Much like DK, Hernandez is an option at just $25. You can also do the same thing with Tyler Beede, who is also priced at the minimum. You’ll likely need one of them to stack up the Cubs (or a similar team).
