I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

FanDuel

DraftKings

Yahoo!

I’m truly happy there aren’t 30 pitchers to sift through today. Just a nice, normal eight gamer. Let’s win some money!

FanDuel

It’s easy at the top. Justin Verlander is the best pitcher on the slate. Now, he has a terrifying matchup against the power bats from Milwaukee, but when push comes to shove, he’s the guy I want most. If I don’t have the money to spend up for Verlander, I’m going to Jose Berrios. The Twins are massive favorites, and the Mariners project to strikeout at an above average rate, so I think a $9600 Berrios is the second best play on FanDuel. If I need even more money, Miles Mikolas is the guy I’m after. He’s rarely popular because of his style, but at $7600, against the Marlins, he has an incredibly high floor. His ceiling is more a volume play than a stuff play, but I expect to be well above the field on Mikolas.

DraftKings

On DraftKings, Verlander is again the clear best option. I can’t imagine spending $400 less for Mike Soroka. They’re simply not comparable. Berrios and Mikolas maintain their status as my #2 and #3 pitcher options. Verlander/Mikolas will be my most owned pitcher combo. The way the slate is set up, I can’t imagine going lower than Mikolas. I’d rather grab a few shares of Shaun Anderson than go down to Edwin Jackson or David Hess.

Yahoo!

For the most part, Yahoo tells the same story as the other sites. Verlander is at the top of the mountain. Berrios is the pivot if you need savings. Mikolas is my favorite pay down option, but I think Anderson is actually just as interesting, since he’s priced at the minimum ($25). One guy I do want to mention for Yahoo is Joey Lucchesi. He’s $43, and pitching in San Francisco against this lackluster Giants offense is as good as it gets. He should be more expensive for this matchup.
