Spotlight Pitchers: Daily Fantasy Baseball Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel with Jack Flaherty | Today, 5/7/21

Today there is a packed 14-game slate in MLB DFS for Friday inclusive of an interesting selection of pitchers available, particularly in lieu of the pricing discrepancies between the two major daily fantasy baseball host sites. Blake Snell is priced up on DraftKings while slipping well into the four-digit range on FanDuel, as Carlos Rodon is still at no-hitter cost scale on the same site. Yet Friday has much to offer in the tiers beneath those guys, such as Jack Flaherty taking on the flailing Rockies at home in Busch and Trevor Rogers stacking up well against the Brewers at home. Here are the Spotlight Pitchers for Friday, May 7.

Top Daily Fantasy Baseball Starting Pitchers | May 7

Jack Flaherty: STL vs. COL — DraftKings $9,400; FanDuel $10,200

The Cardinals are off to a solid start thanks in part to Jack Flaherty, who draws the start against the Rockies. Flaherty has a 1.02 WHIP, 3.28 FIP and is averaging 20.1 DraftKings and 36.33 FanDuel points in six starts. He draws an inviting matchup with a Colorado offense still spinning their wheels to start the season.

Awesemo’s MLB Top Pitchers Tool gives Flaherty a 16.2% chance of being a top-two pitcher on DraftKings and a 6.1% chance of being a top pitcher for FanDuel. While not the most expensive, Flaherty’s spend-up cost reduces his value projections a bit in the Top Pitchers Tool. MLB DFS ownership projections of 39.1% on DraftKings and 18.5% on FanDuel suggest he will also be pretty popular.

Flaherty is scheduled to face five lefties and four right-handed hitters from Colorado. In a larger sample size of 2019, Flaherty had 8.91 K/9, a 7.7% walk rate, 4.02 FIP and 1.29 HR/9. The lethal Trevor Story (third) is hitting a .246 ISO off righties over the past two seasons, while Dom Nunez (eighth) is smacking a .344 ISO on the split this season. The Rockies have a .243 batting average, 23.7% strikeout rate, .303 on-base percentage and 81 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, and they fit the mold as an excellent matchup for Flaherty. His home runs are down, and the Rockies away from home have proven inept thus far, making for a fantasy ceiling for Flaherty.

Blake Snell: SD at SF — DraftKings $10,200; FanDuel $9,000

Blake Snell draws a favorable assignment on the road at Oracle Park to face the injury-laden Giants. With just 1.05 HR/9, a 1.48 WHIP and 3.61 FIP. Snell is heating up heading to San Francisco, while the Giants are hobbling into Friday’s matchup. Awesemo’s MLB Top Pitchers Tool gives Snell a 15.4% chance of being a top-two pitcher on DraftKings and a 5.6% chance of being the top pitcher on FanDuel. Projected among the best options atop the mound Friday, his daily fantasy baseball ownership projections of 34.1% on DraftKings and 28.2% on FanDuel signify g the field’s interest.

Scheduled to face seven righties, Snell’s lopsided matchup appears threatening between the lines. He has 12.57 K/9 against righties, but he also has allowed 1.76 WHIP and 1.40 HR/9.. The Giants facing left-handed pitching have a .241 batting average, 19.4% strikeout rate, 109 wRC+ and a 22% HR/FB rate. San Francisco has power throughout, as Austin Slater, Darin Ruf and Buster Posey (third) are all hitting above a .280 ISO against left-handed pitchers over the past season, while Evan Longoria‘s .360 batting average is nothing to take lightly. Snell’s strikeouts are as impressive as ever, and so long as he keeps his walks down, he has the complete capability of dispatching of this Giants team once again just as he did in his last start.

Trevor Rogers: MIA vs. MIL — DraftKings $8,800; FanDuel $10,400

Trevor Rogers draws the start on Friday at home against the Brewers and priced down considerably on DraftKings. Rogers has 12.0 K/9 1.06 WHIP, 2.59 FIP, and 0.55 HR/9 this season. With an inviting opponent in the Brewers coming to town, Rogers has an opportunity to rebound from a dud in his last outing. Awesemo’s MLB Top Pitchers Tool gives Rogers a 26.9% chance of being a top-two pitcher on DraftKings and an 8.1% chance of being the top pitcher on FanDuel, with outstanding MLB point projections. Like the other options today, however, MLB DFS ownership projections have Rogers among the most popular pitchers today.

Rogers is due to face five righties and four lefties. Against righties Rogers has 11.57 K/9, a .172 average against and 0.89 WHIP this season. The righty threats are Tyrone Taylor (third) and Jacob Nottingham (eighth), who both have ISOs over .400, yet the remainder of the Brewers order is lacking all power. Milwaukee collectively has a .251 batting average, 29.2% strikeout rate, 122 wRC+ and 21.7% HR/FB rate. Priced down on DraftKings, Rogers provides MLB DFS upside without entirely breaking the bank.
