Gerrit Cole: NYY at DET — DraftKings $11,200; FanDuel $12,200
Gerrit Cole takes on the Detroit Tigers on the road, averaging 29.6 DraftKings and 49.9 FanDuel points with a 38.5% strikeout rate in 10 starts. Awesemo’s MLB Top Pitchers Tool gives Cole a 31% chance of becoming a top-two pitcher on DraftKings and a 11.2% chance of being the top pitcher on FanDuel. Some of the slate’s best MLB DFS projections combine with a lofty price tag to give Cole a 6.4% chance of being a top-two value on DraftKings. Daily fantasy baseball ownership projections of 51.5% on DraftKings and 18.9% on FanDuel make the obvious chalk known, as Cole has arguably the best matchup and the highest fantasy ceiling on the slate.
The Tigers will four switch-hitters, three righties and two left-handed hitters, and Cole has earned a 46.4% strikeout rate against left-handed opposition. Akil Baddoo (seventh) has a .302 ISO against right-handed pitching this year and could be a hiccup late in the order for Cole. The Tigers have a .227 batting average, 27.5% strikeout rate and 88 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers. The field ownership and salary cost are the biggest deterrents for Cole here, while the potential to put up monster fantasy totals is clear.

Walker Buehler: LAD vs. SF — DraftKings $10,400; FanDuel $11,000
Walker Buehler looks to repeat on his most recent outing against the Giants, averaging 21.5 DraftKings and 38.22 FanDuel points with a 26.6% strikeout rate in nine starts. Awesemo’s MLB Top Pitchers Tool gives Buehler a 25.1% chance of becoming a top-two pitcher on DraftKings and a 9.9% chance of being the top pitcher on FanDuel. MLB DFS projections cross with a five-digit price tag to give Buehler 7.1% chance of being a top-two value on DraftKings and a 1.3% chance of being the top value pitcher on FanDuel. Daily fantasy baseball ownership projections of 31.2% on DraftKings and 9.4% on FanDuel insinuate elevated attention drawn on the two-pitcher site, while there are no issues on FanDuel.
Facing five lefties and four right-handed hitters from San Francisco, Buehler has earned a 23.1% strikeout rate with a 1.14 WHIP against left-handed hitters this year. Mike Yastrzemski (first) is earning a .302 ISO against right-handed pitchers while Brandon Crawford (fifth) has a .294 batting average and 165 wRC+ against the split. The Giants currently have a .224 batting average, 27.8% strikeout rate and 99 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. Buehler is costly but comes at a fraction of the ownership of Cole while offering promising upside at home.

Jordan Lyles: TEX vs. SEA — DraftKings $5,300; FanDuel $6,700
Jordan Lyles is at a feasible bargain for Friday at Seattle, representing a 19.8% strikeout rate in 10 starts this season. Awesemo’s MLB Top Pitchers Tool gives Lyles a 5.9% chance of becoming a top-two pitcher on DraftKings and a 3.8% chance of reaching top pitcher status on FanDuel. Moderate MLB DFS projections with a dirt-cheap price tag combine to project Lyles for a 24.6% chance of being a top-two value on DraftKings and a 6% chance of being the top value on FanDuel. Daily fantasy baseball ownership projections of 5.3% on DraftKings and 0.30% on FanDuel suggest that Lyles may go mostly overlooked given Friday’s extensive slate size.
The Mariners will have five lefties and four right-handed hitters, and Lyles is striking out left-handed opposition at a 19.3% rate this year. Lefty Kyle Seager (third) has a .241 ISO off right-handed pitchers, while Mitch Haniger (second) precedes him with a .534 slugging percentage and 139 wRC+ against the split. Seattle has a .203 batting average, 25.7% strikeout rate and 85 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. He is not the most attractive option on paper, but Lyles provides salary relief and the ability to go deeper into the game in a great matchup.
