MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks, Monday, June 7
Yahoo Stack of the Day: San Diego Padres vs. RHP Adbert Alzolay — 3.9 implied runs
With only four teams on the main slate, it is going to be tricky to find much differentiation. Gamers are probably going to be looking to the American League matchup for their stacks and the National League game for their pitchers. While the Padres have a tricky matchup against Adbert Alzolay, the Cubs’ bullpen did get a bit of a workout this weekend, particularly their multi-inning options. Additionally, San Diego has the strongest lineup today and there are no real weak links. This will allow for some relative (for a two-game slate) differentiation if considering a 4-5-6-7 stack or even just leaving Fernando Tatis Jr. out of stacks.
The Angels are a much weaker lineup without Mike Trout, and some of the key Cubs are dinged up. The Royals will likely be the most popular option going against highly flammable Dylan Bundy. Again, gamers only need to be a little creative to gain some leverage against the field and should feel OK about taking a couple hitters against rostered pitchers for further differentiation, particularly since there are not even any pseudo-aces available in the player pool tonight.
Boston Red Sox vs. RHP Pablo Lopez — 4.9 implied runs
Last night J.D. Martinez was a late scratch for the Sunday night matchup with a sore wrist, marking his second straight missed game. Speculation is that he will sit this afternoon, but the Red Sox are still a stacking option for the all-day contests. This is a makeup game for the rainout from last Sunday, and tomorrow Boston will be hosting Houston for a three-game set.
Pablo Lopez has been stellar this season, with a 2.82 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP and a strikeout per inning. However, he generally has been limited to 90 pitches, seeing just six total pitches over that benchmark in his last eight starts. Today he will be facing a designated hitter instead of a pitcher for just the second time this season. Danny Santana will likely be leading off, and he is at a near minimum salary across the DFS sites. Alex Verdugo, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers are the trio to target in all formats. Depending on where they are in the lineup, Bobby Dalbec could be part of a wrap-around stack and Hunter Renfroe is a homerun threat every time he steps into the batter’s box. If Martinez is out, Renfroe could bat as high as fifth this afternoon.
Top Target: LHP Ryan Weathers vs. Chicago Cubs — 3.6 implied runs
- DFS Salary: Yahoo $35 | FanDuel $8,100 | DraftKings $6,700
Rookie southpaw Ryan Weathers has totaled 39.1 innings this season across a dozen appearances, including starting his last four games. Tonight he should be in line for 80 to 85 pitches and could go as many as 90 after lasting 88 on Tuesday, which was also his first five-inning outing of the year. The matchup with the Cubs is not going to be a walk in the park, though Javier Baez (hand) and Joc Pederson (back) are dinged up and by no means guaranteed to be in the lineup. Other options are Bundy, who is slumping and will be facing a frisky Royals lineup, and Alzolay going against the formidable Padres.
Wild Card: RHP Jackson Kowar at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim — 4.8 implied runs
- DFS Salary: Yahoo $25 | FanDuel $N/A | DraftKings $6,000
Today marks the MLB debut for Jackson Kowar who is a top-five prospect in the Kansas City pipeline. This season was the first opportunity for Kowar to pitch in Triple-A, and he posted a sterling 5-0 record, 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings, only 0.884 baserunners allowed and nary a homerun across 31.2 innings. Most pundits had him earmarked to make the jump to the majors after the All-Star Break, so this is ahead of schedule. Even though he is fully stretched out, 75 to 80 pitches would be an appropriate expectation for his inaugural start.
Final Thoughts for the Monday, June 7 MLB DFS Slate
Consider Monday’s short slate an appetizer for tomorrow where all 30 teams will be in action on the main slate. As always, be mindful that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a home run play on Yahoo may be a below-average MLB DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
