MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers & Top Stacks for Tuesday, July 27

Tuesday, July 27, has every team in action for a mega main slate. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks for pitchers and stacks for Yahoo, DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks, Tuesday, July 27

Yahoo Stack of the Day: Toronto Blue Jays at RHP Garrett Richards — 5.7 implied runs

Once again the Blue Jays will be the featured stack with their matchup against Garrett Richards. When this same matchup played out last Wednesday, Toronto got to Richards for three home runs. Richards has allowed at least two home runs in three of his last five starts, and he has been open about struggling to find an effective way to pitch with the MLB crackdown on grip enhancers. Across his last five starts — coinciding with in-game inspections for sticky stuff — Richards has been crushed for a 7.04 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, 3.13 home runs per nine and 5.48 strikeouts per nine.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ($23) continues to flirt with the Triple Crown and is the keystone for any Blue Jays stack. George Springer ($18), Marcus Semien ($21) and Bo Bichette ($18) are well-known options at the top of the order, and they will be popular. The back half of the order is interesting, particularly on Yahoo, starting with Teoscar Hernandez and his lofty $20 salary.

Since the MLB crackdown, Richards has allowed same-handed batsmen to post a gaudy .424 wOBA and a .306 ISO. Across his last 400 righty/righty plate appearances, Hernandez has been elite with a .200 ISO. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ($15) and Randal Grichuk ($12) are not too far behind, and those three outfielders will be less popular and cheaper than the top half off the order. Gamers can add in Cavan Biggio ($11) to round out a bottom-of-the-lineup stack, which should provide some tournament differentiation while still gaining access to this cherry matchup.

Evening Slate

Chicago Cubs vs. RHP Vladimir Gutierrez — 5.5 implied runs

The trade deadline is this Friday at 4 p.m. ET, and with the Cubs as prime sellers, there will be a risk that one or more of the regular starters will be scratched from the lineup at the last minute. The matchup against Vladimir Gutierrez is intriguing, as he has allowed at least two home runs in three of his last five starts. Additionally, in his last two starts he has notched only one strikeout across 10 innings.

Javier Baez is on the trade block, and while he did not start last night with a heel “injury,” he did have a pinch-hit appearance with the bases loaded last night to win the game for Chicago in the bottom of the ninth. Kris Bryant has been locked in this season, and in 255 same-handed matchups he has a .342 wOBA and .200 ISO. Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras are core plays with any Cubs stack, and though regression will set in at some point, Patrick Wisdom has a .395 ISO against righties this season.

Late Slate

Oakland Athletics at RHP Chris Paddack — 3.9 implied runs

The pitching on the four-game late slate is decent across the board. Despite being a recommended target several times in this series, Chris Flexen continues to escape any real damage. In 104.2 innings this season he has allowed only nine home runs, although he is striking out a paltry 5.7 per nine innings. Logan Webb is allowing 0.75 home runs per nine innings, and Austin Gomber has actually been good aside from allowing three solo shots to the Mariners in his last start. Jose Suarez is the other question mark, and he too has been serviceable. Plus, this iteration of the Rockies offense is epically awful.

That leaves the Athletics going against Chris Paddack in Petco Field. Though there is DFS name recognition, Paddack has not capitalized on his early career hype. In his five July appearances his strikeouts fell off the table to just six per nine innings. In this stretch he posted a 6.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP while ceding four home runs in 21 innings.

Although Oakland will lose the designated hitter with this game being in a National League park, one can at least speculate where their fantasy production will be concentrated tonight. Matt Olson leads the way, but Mark Canha, Ramon Laureano, Sean Murphy and Matt Chapman are all intriguing from the right side of the plate. They all have above-average to elite power in same-handed matchups, and over his last 290 such battles Paddack has allowed a .366 wOBA and a .250 ISO.

Spotlight Pitchers

Top Target: RHP Lance McCullers at Seattle Mariners — 3.8 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $47 | FanDuel $10,500 | DraftKings $10,400

Seattle has won seven of 10 since returning from the All-Star break. They have also gone 8-1-2 in their last 11 series and are 23-8 (.742) in one-run games. This has all resulted in a record that is nine games above .500 despite a negative-49 run differential. However, that should not dissuade from rolling with Lance McCullers as the top pitcher for Tuesday.

McCullers has a 3.04 ERA in 91.2 innings this season, allowing just 0.58 home runs and striking out 10.5 batters per nine innings. In his last start he allowed four runs, which is the second most he has allowed all season. With his unique combination of heavy groundballs (53.5%) and strikeouts, he should have no trouble with the Mariners tonight.

Secondary Target: RHP Kenta Maeda vs. Detroit Tigers — 3.6 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $37 | FanDuel $8,300 | DraftKings $8,200

After a shaky first two months, Kenta Maeda has settled down just in time to catch the eye of playoff contenders as a potential trade candidate. Across four July starts he has tallied 23 innings, a 2.35 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and only one home run. Two of these starts have come against tonight’s opponent, but that should not scare gamers from rolling with Maeda as the secondary pitcher on Yahoo and FanDuel in main lineups.

Wild Card: RHP Dane Dunning vs. Arizona Diamondbacks — 4.0 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $29 | FanDuel $7,700 | DraftKings $6,400

There is some risk with Dane Dunning tonight ,and it is neither the matchup nor the ballpark. Arizona has been a bottom-five team all season against right-handed pitchers, and the roof in Arlington will be closed due to the Texas heat. Dunning is just 2.2 innings shy of his three-year high and the second-most work he has seen since 144 minor league innings back in 2017. The Rangers have been very careful with his workload, and tonight marks his second appearance in the last 20 days. He has topped 80 pitches only three times in 18 starts, and he has not thrown more than 72 since late June. Something in the 15-fantasy-point range tonight seems reasonable for DraftKings and Yahoo. However, stay away from Dunning on FanDuel, as he is going to dramatically curb the upside of lineups there with the single-pitcher roster requirements.

Final Thoughts for the Tuesday, July 27 MLB DFS Slate

With all 30 teams in action, this is the largest possible player pool. That will create plenty of opportunities for every strategy imaginable in tournaments. With so many alternatives, there is no reason to play players that cause discomfort.
