MAIN SLATE
New York Yankees at RHP David Hess – 5.7 implied run total
It is nice to see DraftKings and Yahoo! pricing up some of the key Yankees hitters, though recent acquisition Kendrys Morales can be had at a discount on most sites. The pricing and the fact that there are fourteen games should diffuse some of the popularity of the Bronx Bombers, but this is a situation against a sub-par pitcher with one of the worst bullpens in the league behind him.
RHP David Hess (rhymes with mess) will be facing New York for the fourth time this season. He has allowed 14 home runs on the season and seven have come in his 11 innings against the Yankees. Clearly that has no bearing on Tuesday’s outcome, but it is good to see that at least some of Tuesday’s opposing batters have had success against Hess.
Our preferred order of preference pondering price, position, popularity and potential production are Gary Sanchez, Luke Voit, Kendrys Morales, Gleyber Torres and Aaron Hicks. Any other options are fair game as differentiation plays.
New York Mets vs RHP Eric Fedde – 4.3 implied runs
There is a joke about the song New York, New York here… however, I will refrain from making it. RHP Eric Fedde is not an overly intimidating pitcher who relies on ground balls and double plays to help make up for his higher than normal 10.0 BB% and league-average 20.1 K%. While the #LOLMets have reappeared over the last week with the Metropolitans getting swept in Miami by the Marlins being held scoreless from the ninth inning on Friday through the weekend with Robinson Cano actually making two separate baserunning gaffes by not hustling to first base in a series where the Mets were only outscored by six runs over the three games.
With Michael Conforto (concussion) out and Yoenis Cespedes embodying the true #LOLMets spirit by breaking his ankle this weekend in what was already looking like a lengthy rehab for his heel surgeries that was going to keep him out until at least early-August, we can still turn to Robinson Cano, Pete Alonso, Wilson Ramos, J.D. Davis and even the Toddfather and or Juan Lagares/Carlos Gomez for some salary relief as the Nationals have one of the worst bullpens in the league that has been overworked recently.
EVENING SLATE
Texas Rangers vs LHP Tommy Milone – 5.3 implied runs
While a lot of gamers will be looking to the Houston Astros who are in a fine matchup against the abysmal RHP Dylan Covey, I want to go back to the Rangers once more, because LHP Tommy Milone is not an intimidating pitcher. The 32-year old veteran will be making his first start for the Mariners which is the sixth different franchise he’s played for. And while he has been solid at AAA Tacoma this year, it speaks volumes that a journeyman such as himself was relegated there for so long when he will be debuting for the team that has allowed the must runs in the league this season.
A lot of gamers are going to shy away from Joey Gallo, but do keep in mind that he has a .328 ISO in his last 217 lefty/lefty matchups which is actually higher than his eye-popping .298 ISO in his last 535 lefty/righty matchups… just sayin’ to not overlook him. Nomar Mazara also fares well against southpaws as does switch hitter Danny Santana and this would make for a nice power trio.
LATE SLATE
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs RHP Michael Pineda – 5.1 implied runs
On the season, RHP Michael Pineda has allowed 13 home runs with nine coming in his last four starts. He has reasonable strikeout stuff, but he suffers continual mental lapses on the mound and never quite can finish the job. The Halos strike out at the lowest rate in the league against both righties and lefties and they are a fierce team to deal with now that Shohei Ohtani is back in the mix, the streaking Tommy La Stella and oh yeah, they still have Mike Trout. If you want to focus on a four or five man stack then we ca add in Andrelton Simmons, Kole Calhoun and Albert Pujols in the hopes that the Twins bullpen melts down along with Tuesday’s starter.
