Main Slate

Boston Red Sox vs. RHP Trent Thornton – 6.2 implied runs

While rookie RHP Trent Thornton has had some solid outings this season mixed in with his 19 starts, he has had a couple of meltdowns in two of his last three outings including 6.0 combined innings vs. BOS and at NYY allowing a dozen earned runs, 21 base runners, three round trippers with just five strikeouts.

This will be his third start against the Red Sox and in the previous two he has allowed a combined nine innings with 21 base runners, nine earned runs, eight strikeouts and a dinger with those starts coming on July 2 and June 26.

Against 208 same-handed hitters, Thornton has held his own allowing a .326 wOBA, .123 ISO with a 23.1 K% though the 10.1 BB% is concerning… against 210 lefties it is a different story with a .357 wOBA, .235 ISO, 23.3 K% and a 9.5 BB%.

Rafael Devers, Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr. will be the trio to target and though they will be spread throughout the batting order, we can use Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts and Christian Vazquez as options to “connect the dots” in full-stacks.

Evening Slate

Chicago White Sox at RHP Jakob Junis – 4.6 implied run total

Despite allowing two home runs in his final start before the All-Star Break, RHP Jake Junis held the Nationals in check as those were both solo shots and the only runners Junis allowed to cross the plate. Since the beginning of last season, Junis has allowed 52 home runs which is the third most in the league behind fellow righties Dylan Bundy 62 and Justin Verlander 52 and he has allowed multiple home runs in five of his last ten starts.

Junis is very generous to hitters from both sides of the plate with a the last 621 lefties accumulating a .351 wOBA, .184 ISO and 22 home runs with 608 righties compiling a .331 wOBA, .209 ISO with 30 home runs. The ChiSox probable production will be concentrated in Jose Abreu, Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez and if we are looking for some differentiation, then James McCann is fine on sites where we are required to play a catcher.

Late Slate

Coors Field Extravaganza – 13.2 implied run total

We have a Coors Field doubleheader as the Giants and Rockies have a makeup game at 2:10pm ET and then the nightcap at 8:40pm ET. San Francisco is expected to recall RHP Dereck Rodriguez from the farm system where he has made starts for two different affiliates in July as he is converting back to a starting role, he should be fine for 80-85 pitches on Monday night. Over his last 398 righty/righty matchups, Rodriguez has a 3.51 ERA, but the 4.60 xFIP, 0.92 HR/9 and 41.6 HH% are not going to play well in Denver. The last 338 lefties have tallied a 3.72 ERA, 5.07 xFIP with a 1.05 HR/9 and a 41.7 HH%.

Both Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado received the day off Sunday, so they should be in the mix even with the doubleheader.  David Dahl, Daniel Murphy and Ian Desmond round out the key options and then whomever else makes the lineup will be worthy of consideration in the best hitting environment on the board.

The Rockies have not announced a starter for the evening game at the time of this article being posted, but with RHP German Marquez tabbed for the afternoon game, it would make sense that RHP Peter Lambert gets the nod or someone is called up from the minors as the 26th man which would mean that RHP Chi Chi Gonzales may be tabbed to take the bump.

Regardless of who gets the ball in the first inning, we should see several members of the bullpen keeping in mind that on Saturday and Sunday, the Rockies allowed 26 runs to the Cincinnati Reds.
