I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

FanDuel

DraftKings

Yahoo

[table id=1201 /]

I’m not going to lie. This is going to be a struggle. This is the most difficult slate of pitching to break down all year. There’s not really a single talented pitcher on the entire slate. No one stands out. Ownership and hitting stacks should largely dictate your pitching decisions.

FanDuel MLB DFS Pitcher Picks

On FanDuel, Mike Minor is the only guy priced north of $10K. He’s one of just two guys (Logan Allen) priced higher than $7500. Currently, Minor is projected for 5.6 strikeouts, which is the highest number on the slate. For reference, Max Scherzer was just over 11 yesterday. While he has the highest overall projection, I’m not sure I want to be paying up all that much. He’s just a bit too expensive to go crazy, especially in Texas against an Angels team that doesn’t strikeout much. Trevor Williams looks good enough at just $7200, but it’s clearly a tough matchup against the Cubs. If Ryan Yarbrough really is the guy for the Rays today, then he’s likely the “safest” play on the slate. He’s a solid starter in a pitcher’s park against a putrid Orioles offense. $6600 is a bit of a bargain in this spot. I expect him to be my most owned starter.

DraftKings MLB DFS Pitcher Picks

DraftKings looks pretty similar. Paying up for Minor is fine, but it’s not exactly an exciting move. Jeff Samardzija is normally easy to ignore, but today is not like every other day. While San Diego isn’t the same pitcher’s park as it has been in the past, it’s still good for pitchers. The Padres strikeout out more than average, so it looks like Samardzija will be in play as a solid SP2. Honestly, you can even use him as an SP1 if you want to pair him with Yarbrough or Adbert Alzolay. Outside of Adrian Houser, I think every single pitcher on the slate is viable on DK.

Yahoo MLB DFS Pitcher Picks

Most of my opinions for Yahoo mirror my thoughts from DraftKings. Minor is $48, which is fine but not exciting. Williams and Samardzija look like a decent pairing in the mid $30s. Alzolay at $28 is just shy of the Williams/Shark duo. Much like DraftKings, I’m willing to roster everyone except for Houser. One thing to note, Tom Eshelman and Jose Suarez aren’t available, so there are only eight arms to choose from. Good luck!
