I wanted to put a different spin on Spotlight DFS Pitchers, so I’m giving everyone a peek behind the curtain on how I look at them. Below you’ll find two tables, one for DraftKings and one for FanDuel, with the pitcher pool for today’s slate. In the table, you’ll find the pitcher’s name, salary, my projection and my percentage likelihood that they hit a particular target score.

This is the information that helps me make my decisions for which pitchers to roster. Using my projected stat line for a pitcher, I can estimate their chances of scoring 45+ FD points or 30+ DK points. These targets ignore the points acquired for getting the win, as I use the Vegas odds to set those scores for my pitchers.

Since I am a strict MME player in baseball, these are the thresholds I’ve determined I want on a day-to-day basis to try and win a tournament. Because of the difference in roster construction between the sites, I end up with a concentrated pool on FanDuel and a more spread out pool on DraftKings.

FanDuel

[table id=1177 /]

DraftKings

[table id=1178 /]

Yahoo!

[table id=1201 /]

This is going to be fun. We have 12 games on the slate and there’s not a single true ace pitcher going. Getting pitcher correct will be tougher than normal.

FanDuel

Right now, my favorite pitcher on FanDuel is Patrick Corbin. He’s the fifth most expensive pitcher, which is certainly a plus, but with Mike Soroka being the most expensive guy just $800 ahead of him, price isn’t all that important. I’m betting on Corbin’s strikeout talent and the potential for him to neutralize the Phillies’ lefties. If Corbin isn’t your cup of tea, my next guy up is the returning Mike Clevinger. By all accounts, we should expect Clevinger to not be limited in his return. That’s excellent news for a starter with major strikeout stuff who gets to face the Rangers in his return. This is a tasty, high-upside spot. There’s some risk, since Clevinger hasn’t pitched since April, but I’m certainly willing to take that risk.

After Clevinger, I’ll drop down a little further to Masahiro Tanaka. The Rays are talented, for sure, but they have a fair share of strikeouts in their projected lineup. He’s just another high-upside arm in the $9000 range. With such a concentration of similar arms at the top, it’s hard to advocate for paying down, but if you need to, I would recommend Mike Fiers. Fiers gets to pitch in Oakland, which is a fantastic pitcher’s park. If that’s not good enough, he gets to face an Orioles team that is nothing short of terrible. It’s hard to get a better set of external factors.

DraftKings

DraftKings is wild. Most of my recommendations have significant salary discounts. Corbin, Clevinger and Tanaka are all at $8700 or less. You can easily just play different combinations of those three guys. Zack Wheeler is in play at $9200, but it’s hard for me to prefer him to the guys with cheaper prices. He’s more of a pay up to be contrarian guy, if his ownership stays low. If it’s high, just pivot. Fiers is fine here, but his proximity in price to Corbin and Tanaka makes the appeal a bit lighter. What I want to do is pay all the way down to $6400 for Miles Mikolas. He’s not a fantastic DFS pitcher, but a date with the Marlins makes everyone look good. At his price, you don’t really need much to pay off the price tag. He can easily go deep into this game and make up for the lack of strikeouts with volume.

Yahoo!

Yahoo! is mixing it up even further. Even though he’s returning from a lengthy IL stint, Clevinger is the most expensive pitcher. I still like him, but I’ll definitely take Corbin and Tanaka before him. Wheeler is the guy that stands out the most at just $36. That’s simply too low for a pitcher with his upside. If I’,m paying down past Wheeler, the only guy that catches my eye is Danny Duffy. The Mariners project to strikeout at an above-average rate, which is all I need to know for my SP2. A lot of the Mariners power is wrapped up in lefties, which plays into Duffy perfectly.
