Houston Astros vs. LHP Sean Manaea – 4.45 implied runs

Keep in mind the playoffs are now at neutral sites with the Astros and Athletics playing in Dodger Stadium. The Yankees and Rays are playing in Petco Park this afternoon. The Marlins and Braves at Minute Maid Park, and the Padres and Dodgers playing in Globe Life Park.

Both teams ended up going to their bullpens early as the respective starters each allowed multiple home runs through the first four innings. Oakland used seven relievers, though none threw more than 19 pitches. In September 2018 Manaea underwent rotator cuff surgery and missed nearly a full year. He returned Sept. 1 and made six starts down the stretch. This season he averaged 75 pitches over his 11 outings. In general he was solid, though not spectacular.

We know that the Astros have a long track record of success against southpaws. Manaea has performed well in 238 lefty/righty matchups since returning last fall with a 0.91 HR/9 and a .130 ISO. Regardless, the Astros are too talented to ignore.

Alex Bregman is the first player to target with his massive .353 ISO in his last 459 plate appearances against lefties with a 182 wRC+. George Springer and Yuli Gurriel are not too far behind with  a .218 ISO/134 wRC+ and .224 ISO/130 wRC+, respectively.

Jose Altuve is still in a major slump, but he has made hay against lefties for most of his career. Finally, for some differentiation we can mix and match with Michael Brantley and Kyle Tucker, who both hold their own in lefty/lefty matchups.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Mike Clevinger – 4.8 implied runs

There is a chance that Dinelson Lamet and/or Mike Clevinger may be able to take the mound if the Padres make it to the National League Division Series. That, however, is a tall task, as they still have to make it through the Dodgers. Whoever draws the start is unlikely to go more than a couple innings before giving way to reinforcements. If that information is updated closer to game time, I will revise this analysis accordingly.

UPDATE: RHP Mike Clevinger has been announced as the pitcher – I still am not worried about this as he will be treated with kid gloves as it has been almost two weeks since he last took the mound. Dinelson Lament is not on the Padres roster for this round.

In the first two games of the opening round against the Cardinals, Chris Paddack started the series opener, lasting just 2.1 innings, then fellow righty Zach Davies made it just two innings in the second game. Part of this was by design, part of this was because neither hurler was particularly effective.

This game will be played in Texas, and we do not know if the roof will be open. It will be in the upper-70s at first pitch, so there is a good chance it will be. Keep in mind that the roof was only open twice, and at first blush, in our small sample size, Globe Life Park seems to be a pitching-friendly venue.

As we all know, the Dodgers are loaded with most of their batters able to handle righties or lefties. That will be key as the Padres have several lefties available from the pen. That could chase a situational hitter like Joc Pederson, who generally does not get to face that many lefties.

Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, Corey Seager, A.J. Pollock, Justin Turner, Chris Taylor and catcher Will Smith do not have those issues. Of course, neither does offseason acquisition Mookie Betts. I had some fun feedback from this next section, so I am going to include it again. We can all marvel at the collection of hitters assembled by Los Angeles.

Mookie Betts: All-Star and Gold Gloves in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. Silver Slugger in 2016, 2018 and 2019. 2018 AL MVP.

Corey Seager: 2016 Rookie of the Year, All-Star in 2016 and 2017 with MVP votes in 2016 and 2017.

Justin Turner: All-Star MVP in 2017 with regular season MVP votes in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Max Muncy: All-Star MVP in 2019 with MVP votes in 2018 and 2019.

Cody Bellinger: 2017 Rookie of the Year, All-Star in 2017 and 2019 with the 2019 NL MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards.

A.J. Pollock: 2015 All-Star with a Gold Glove and MVP votes.

Joc Pederson: 2015 All-Star
