Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Houston Astros vs. LHP Jesus Luzardo – 4.7 implied runs

Keep in mind the playoffs are now at neutral sites with the Astros and Athletics playing in Dodger Stadium. The Yankees and Rays are playing in Petco Park this afternoon. The Marlins and Braves at Minute Maid Park, and the Padres and Dodgers playing in Globe Life Park.

The Astros are now in control of the series after winning the first two installments. They are facing yet another lefty in and as I have been writing about all season, they are once more the team to target. Righties Mike Fiers, Liam Hendriks and Frankie Montas are the only pitchers not yet used in this series. My guess is that we will see Luzardo for around 50-60 pitches unless he gets in trouble prior to that mark.

Just like Tuesday, Alex Bregman is the first player to target with his massive .353 ISO in his last 459 plate appearances against lefties with a 182 wRC+. George Springer and Yuli Gurriel are not too far behind with  a .218 ISO/134 wRC+ and .224 ISO/130 wRC+, respectively. Jose Altuve is still in a major slump, but he has made hay against lefties for most of his career. Finally, for some differentiation we can mix and match with Michael Brantley and Kyle Tucker, who both hold their own in lefty/lefty matchups.

Tampa Bay Rays at RHP Masahiro Tanaka – 4.8 implied runs

It will be in the mid-70s at first pitch for this game being played in Petco Park. Tampa Bay has been flexing some power, and they also have Austin Meadows back in the mix serving as the designated hitter. This will be the fourth time Tanaka has faced Tampa Bay this season. The first three games he tallied a 4.20 ERA, 0.87 WHIP with 14 strikeouts across 15.0 innings. The three home runs are typical of a Tanaka start. Since the beginning of 2018, he has allowed a 1.22 HR/9 and a .190 ISO to lefties. Righties have compiled a 1.47 HR/9 with a .185 ISO in the same time frame.

Meadows was put on the injured list with a strained oblique, but he has a .261 ISO with a 142 wRC+ in his last 538 lefty/righty matchups. Sticking with that side of the plate, Ji-Man Choi has been phenomenal with a 13.5% walk rate, .219 ISO and 134 wRC+ in his last 687 plate appearances against opposite-handed hurlers. Finally we have Brandon Lowe, who even with a 27.6% strikeout rate against righties has showed his light-tower power with a .243 ISO and a 132 wRC+.

From the right side of the plate, we can consider Randy Arozarena, who has a .230 ISO against same-handed hurlers in his limited time in The show. Willy Adames can be used as a differentiation play along with Kevin Kiermaier. While we have not yet seen Yoshi Tsutsugo, he is in the mix if he draws a start. If it ends up being former Padres Manuel Margot or Hunter Renfroe, keep in mind they are familiar with the batter’s eye here in San Diego.
