Slate Action

Greeting Gamers! With all of the COVID-19 related issues, there are just six games on the FanDuel and DraftKings main slate. SuperDraft is going with the remaining nine games beginning at 2:05 p..m EST. Yahoo has every game on their 1:05 p.m. EST main slate.

Similar to last year I will be providing a review of one stack for the main slate as well as the viable sub-slates with at least two games on the docket. Some of these short-slate options will be good for the full-game set, others will be more contrarian and better suited for the mini-game sets.

Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at LHP Tommy Milone – 5.8 implied runs

Milone and the dreadful Orioles bullpen is facilitating a project 5.8 implied runs for the Rays. Milone has a 46 fly ball rate over his last 587 batters faced with about 16% of his fly balls leaving the yard. Righties have a 1.88 HR/9 rate over the last two seasons, while same-handed hitters have a 2.23 HR/9.

Our primary target should be Hunter Renfroe with his .273 ISO in his last 314 at bats against lefties. Yandy Diaz (.204), Jose Martinez (.199) and Brandon Lowe (.234) all pack the lumber. Mike Zunino is the punt catcher with home run upside on sites that require a backstop. While it is a limited sample size of only 150 big league at-bats, Mike Brosseau has some pop when given the platoon advantage.

Mid Afternoon-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Chicago White Sox at RHP Jakob Junis – 5.0 implied runs

Over the last two seasons, Junis has been a pinata of sorts, allowing 63 home runs, seventh most in that stretch. Of those, 37 have been to righties and 26 to opposite-handed hitters. The respective home run rates per nine innings are 1.88 and 1.33 in that time frame.

The White Sox are loaded when it comes to power hitters with Jose Abreu, Edwin Encarnacion, Eloy Jimenez, Yasmani Grandal and Yoan Moncada all posting .200+ ISOs over the last two seasons against right-handed hurlers. Rookie Luis Robert fits right in, as he knocked his second of the season out of the park last night. This squad is a solid pivot away from our next game.

Coors Field Extravaganza Picks

San Diego Padres at RHP Antonio Senzatela– 7.2 implied runs

Colorado Rockies vs. RHP Zach Davies – 6.5 implied runs

With the temperature at first pitch approaching the low-90s, this is a phenomenal hitting situation. We have a couple of shaky pitchers and some sketchy bullpens behind them.

Each of the sites is handling pricing differently:

  • Yahoo: Stays consistent by doing a good job pricing up the key options
  • FanDuel: Is lame once again with just three projected starters above $4,000
  • DraftKings: Continued to make things interesting with four projected starters from each team topping $5,000.

Over his last 690 batters faced, Davies has a mediocre 5.06 xFIP, 5.5 strikeout rate and a 41.5 ground ball rate. It is no surprise that he is a little worst against lefties, but the splits are not that dramatic. While Davies does not usually implode, he does not go very deep into games either. That means we get some bullpen arms that have been getting a good workout since Thursday.

The usual suspects are in play from the Rockies, though we are paying a premium on sites not named FanDuel. Charlie Blackmon, David Dahl, Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado are the core four. It would not be a surprise to see one of them get an off day on Sunday, which means we could get a relatively discounted reserve in the lineup.

Senzatela has a similar but worse skill set than his Sunday counterpart. We will want to look to the lefties first as he has allowed a .397 wOBA and a .206 ISO in his last 290 batters faced. Trent Grisham will likely bat second or third, and Jurickson Profar will be in the middle of the order. Depending on the health of Eric Hosmer (flu), rookie Jake Cronenworth may find himself in the lineup as a discount dandy. Josh Naylor is also going to be in the mix, but he is not exciting outside of stacks.

The power options abound from the right-hand side with Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Tommy Pham. Though he is not a household name, Wil Myers is no slouch either.

Late-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Oakland Athletics at RHP Kendall Graveman – 5.0 implied runs

Graveman allowed a dismal 2.36 HR/9 in his 34.1 innings prior to his 2018 Tommy John surgery. In his outing last week, he allowed seven runs on nine baserunners against the Astros. One positive sign for Mariners fans is that he was able to get his fastball in the upper-90s and did have seven punchouts.

Until we see otherwise, my inclination is still to lean on the light tower power options in the Athletics lineup. Matt Olson is a top priority followed by Matt Chapman, Marcus Semien, Mark Canha and Ramon Laureano. DraftKings is making this a challenge on their late slate with the lofty price tags. Yahoo has done a nice job as well, and per the norm, FanDuel is offering a buy-one-get-one sale.
