MLB DFS ACTION

Greetings, Gamers! Currently we have 10 games on the main slate for DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo. SuperDraft is going off five minutes later with seven games. The difference is the Phillies-Yankees game, which could be postponed depending on the health of the Philadelphia players.

Similar to last year I will be providing a review of one stack for each of the day’s slates. Some of these short-slate options will be good for the full-game set, others will be more contrarian and better suited for the mini-game sets.

Sign up for SuperDraft today using promo code “awesemo10” and it’s $10 FREE on your first deposit of $10 or more and $20 total FREE on your first deposit of $100 or more. Download in the App Store or play at superdraft.io.

Main-Slate Picks

Minnesota Twins at RHP Trevor Williams – 5.0 implied runs

Over his last 19 starts, Williams has allowed multiple home runs nine times. He is not a particularly efficient pitcher with a 7.7% walk rate and an 18.1% strikeout rate for his career. Since his 2016 debut he has posted a 4.25 ERA, which is a half a run better than his 4.75 xFIP would indicate. Basically he is a perfectly fine fourth starter. Unfortunately for the Pirates, he is their No. 2 starter behind ace-in-name-only Joe Musgrove.

PNC Park tends to suppress power for right-handed hitters, but stacks are most effective when there are a lot of base runners to go along with extra base hits. Keep in mind the Twins’ active roster has a top-three ranking by most power metrics for the last two seasons combined. The Pirates bullpen also has bottom-five numbers in most categories since the start of 2018.

In their last 500-plus at bats, Max Kepler, Nelson Cruz, Mitch Garver, Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano all have isolated powers of at least .200 against righties. Josh Donaldson has been dealing with a calf strain, but he too is in this group. Then we have Jorge Polanco and Luis Arraez, who both get on base at nearly 40% of the time. Once again the Twins are in a solid situation as a primary stack.

Coors Field Extravaganza Picks

San Francisco Giants at RHP Jon Gray – 5.5 implied runs

Colorado Rockies vs. RHP Logan Webb/TBD – 6.5 implied runs

The Rockies will be off to Seattle for a three-game road trip this weekend. Thursday they are playing an afternoon game, so that means this will be the last “Coors Field Extravaganza” for a while.

Each of the sites is handling pricing differently:

  • Yahoo: Provides a few spendy options with a couple of cheapies on each side.
  • FanDuel: It only took a week, but FanDuel now has four Rockies above $3,800.
  • DraftKings: Six projected Rockies are now over $5,100, and three Giants top $4,800.

Gray is a good pitcher with twin 23.7% strikeout rates against righties and opposite-handers over the last two plus seasons. While he has posted a 4.21 ERA with a 1.12 HR/9 rate in his last 169.0 Coors Field innings, he has actually been unlucky with a 3.47 xFIP. His best strength is his nearly 50% ground ball rate coupled with his decent strikeout ability.

The analysis for the Giants is literally the same as what I used for Tuesday (they scored just two runs): It looks like a bit of a trap taking San Francisco hitters, but anything can happen. We also want to keep in mind that the current collection of Colorado relievers has posted bottom-10 showings over the last two seasons in most traditional and advanced metrics. Focus on lefties Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt and Alex Dickerson, but there is no need to force them into lineups on DraftKings and Yahoo.

Who will draw the short straw for the Giants?!

While we do not have an official starting pitcher listed for San Francisco, early indications are the it will be Logan Webb, though there may be an opener employed. Webb has 47.1 innings in The Show after spending the better part of six seasons working his way through the farm system. He has worked mainly as a starter with 302.1 innings and a very average 8.2 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, though his 0.5 HR/9 is good.

It is nice to see that DraftKings and Yahoo are taking the pricing seriously so far for Coors Field games. The top six in the order for the Rockies are very viable options, though they are not coming at much of a discount outside of Daniel Murphy and Ryan McMahon. Their core four are appropriately priced but still project as the top stack of the night. Look to Charlie Blackmon, David Dahl, Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado in that order.

Late-Slate Picks

Houston Astros at LHP Robbie Ray – 5.5 implied runs

On Tuesday night Houston chased Madison Bumgarner in the fifth inning, ultimately plating five runs and eight total against the veteran southpaw. They get another lefty on Wednesday night in Ray. While Ray has outstanding strikeout stuff (seven or more in 20 of 33 starts last year) he has some control issues and does allow the long ball. In his last start he walked a career-high six batters. Last year he allowed multiple home runs in 10 of his 33 starts.

Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve and George Springer are the power trio to focus on, and if you want to go for a full stack, include Carlos Correa and Yuli Gurriel. The Astros are most definitely the top late-slate stack, and they will be in the mix with the Rockies on the main slate.
