MLB DFS ACTION

Greetings, Gamers! We have wall-to-wall baseball for Thursday.

Similar to last year I will be providing a review of one stack for each of the day’s slates. Some of these short-slate options will be good for the full-game set, others will be more contrarian and better suited for the mini-game sets.

Coors Field Extravaganza MLB DFS Picks

San Francisco Giants at LHP Kyle Freeland – 3.7 implied runs

Colorado Rockies vs. TBD – 5.0 implied runs

The Rockies will be off to Seattle for a three-game road trip after this game.

Freeland is a bit of an enigma as he had excellent numbers in Coors Field during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. This is evidenced by his 180.2 innings with a 3.04 ERA, 4.12 xFIP and a 0.90 HR/9. In 2019 the wheels came off the wagon. After a horrible start he was sent down to the minors where he made six starts with an 8.80 ERA and a 4.85 BB/9 rate.  The organization brought him back up to the big club, and he finished up the year with a dismal 6.73 ERA while allowing 1.58 baserunners per inning.

So far through two starts, he has gone 80 and 83 pitches in twin six-inning appearances. Ground balls have been the key with 14 helping keep his 10 baserunners from scoring. He also has nine punchouts, which is decent for him. The Giants’ best hitters are coming from the left side of the plate, so I actually am OK with utilizing Freeman as an SP2 on the afternoon slate.

Who will draw the short straw for the Giants?!

There are no indications yet who will be starting for the Giants, and this could even be a bullpen game. With the trip to Seattle, we may see one of the Rockies regulars get a day of rest. Focus on the usual suspects at the top of the order and branch out for differentiation.

Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks

New York Yankees vs. RHP Zach Eflin – 5.0 implied runs

The key to targeting Eflin is loading up on batters swinging the stick from the left side of the plate. Over the last two seasons, he has allowed a .356 wOBA and .228 ISO to opposite-handed batsmen. The Yankees are actually embracing utilizing Mike Ford and Mike Tauchman, both of whom saw action Wednesday night. This unassuming duo has posted respective .191 and .232 ISOs against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons. Aaron Hicks and Brett Gardner also are in play with their power upside when they have the platoon advantage.

There is a good chance that the Yankee lefties are spaced throughout the lineup, but not to fear; Gleyber Torres, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton all bring the lumber against righties as well.

Baltimore Orioles vs. RHP Jordan Yamamoto – 5.0 implied runs

It sounds like Yamamoto will be getting the call to take the mound for the Marlins on Thursday. Keep in mind that this game is actually in Camden Yards despite Miami being listed as the home team.

Prior to last season’s promotion, Yamamoto had not pitched above Double-A in any of his six minor league seasons. While he did have a solid 9.6 K/9 in the lower levels, his results in the show were uneven. On a positive note, he had a 25.2% strikeout rate across 325 batters. However, the 11.1% walk rate and low 35.3% ground ball rate did not do him any favors.

The Orioles are a mostly unassuming group, but they are pesky, and a few even look like they really do belong in The Show. Renato Nunez, Anthony Santander, Austin Hays and Dwight Smith Jr. are not household names, but they are cheap and will allow us to do pretty much anything else we want with our rosters.
