Main-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Chicago Cubs vs RHP Sixto Sanchez – 4.1 implied runs

Sanchez had a fine debut season with a 3.46 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 39.0 innings. The best part is he kept the ball in the park with just three round-trippers. The youngster first appeared at age 16 in the Dominican Summer League with the Phillies and worked his way through low and high-A ball. After being part of the J.T. Realmuto trade, he pitched mostly in AA last season. With 7.9 K/9, he does not portend to be a strikeout guy, but at just 21 years old, he has time to improve.

Over his 335.1 innings in the minors, Sanchez has allowed only nine home runs. Of course, outside of this abbreviated season, he has not faced major league hitting. The Cubs are in trouble after dropping Game 1 on Tuesday, and this is a win-or-go-home game already.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s column, full stacks do not generally come to fruition with managers able to turn to so many fresh arms in these short series. Instead, we are best served looking for duos and trios from a couple different teams with the hopes of corralling an extra base hit with our players on base and in the batter’s box.

With Chicago, we can easily mix and match from the top six in the order, utilizing position eligibility and pricing as our guide depending on how we build our lineups. Jason Kipnis is also interesting as a discount dandy at the bottom of the order because if he gets on base, there will be all of the key batsmen lining up to drive him home.

San Diego vs. RHP Adam Wainwright – 4.8 implied runs

With Dinelson Lamet and Mike Clevinger not on the Padres round 1 playoff roster, they are going to have to claw out of this 0-1 deficit with their bats. Today will mark the 15th different postseason series in which 39-year-old Wainwright has made a start. This year he tallied 65.2 innings with an outstanding 3.15 ERA, 1.05 WHIP with 54 punchouts and nine home runs allowed.

We should see Trent Grisham leading off with a righty on the mound and he is still being overlooked by the masses, even with his excellent performance in this abbreviated season. Over 179 lefty/righty matchups this year he has an elite .232 ISO and enough lineup protection to make any hitter jealous.

Fernando Tatis Jr. Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer of course are the power trio to target, but everyone knows that. Mitch Moreland should be batting fifth or sixth, replacing Austin Nola with the platoon advantage. Moreland still packs the lumber, and he is no stranger to the postseason with 127 at-bats across 13 playoff series with the Red Sox and Rangers including three World Series. Though Wil Myers will likely slide down the lineup with a righty on the mound, he is in play along with catcher Jason Castro, who is projected to return from his sprained jaw/potential concussion suffered on a foul tip during the final day of the regular season.

Jake Cronenworth will likely be batting ninth or eighth with Jurickson Profar swapping slots. They both have pop and gamers seem to forget that homeruns from the bottom of the order still count the same as those from the top.

Late-Slate MLB DFS Picks

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. RHP Brandon Woodruff – 4.6 implied runs

Assuming manager Craig Counsell does not change his mind, Woodruff should draw the start. We know that he is not afraid with having a quick hook and will turn to one of his many bullpen arms if things start to go south.

While the Yankees have the raw power, this Dodgers squad is approaching a near All-Star level with everyone healthy. The “weakest” spot is a rotating group including Joc Pederson, Enrique Hernandez and Edwin Rios. Catcher Will Smith has a .353 ISO in 239 career plate appearances against righties.
