Yu Darvish – Cubs vs. Indians – FanDuel $11,200, DraftKings $11,300
Darvish comes in as your top dog at starting pitcher on a night that’s pretty tough overall. We’ll touch on a few options, and there are a few others worth considering, but there isn’t much value in any spot. On a slate like this one, it comes down to digging up the three or four arms that emerge in tournaments. Darvish is striking out 11.57 batters per nine innings and has posted an elite 2.61 xFIP. He’s been a bit up and down of late, but the guaranteed strikeouts help in a big way with both the floor and ceiling. He’s been over 40 FanDuel points in eight consecutive starts and 10 of his last 11.
He’ll match up with the Indians tonight, who are a middle-of-the-road offense against right-handed pitching. They’re actually a bit worse than that, ranking 24th with a .305 team wOBA and 24.2% strikeout rate. They have some tough bats to avoid in the middle of the order, but the bottom is ugly and they all strike out around a quarter of the time. The Indians are implied to score 3.46 runs tonight, and the Cubs are comfortable -175 favorites. Darvish is going to cost you, but the pickings are slim on this slate and Darvish offers far more upside than any other arm. Fire away if you have the money to spend.

Deivi Garcia – Yankees – FanDuel $8,900, DraftKings $8,000
It’s been a bit of a surprise just how good Garcia has been in 2020, but it’s not because of low expectations. He was just expected to take a year or two more. He’s just 21 years old and is striking out 9.17 batters per nine with an xFIP just over 4.00. The Yankees coaching staff has harped on his maturity as a youngster, and they’ve given him a nice leash (95 pitches in last two games). He draws the Blue Jays for the second consecutive game after throwing seven innings with six strikeouts on the road just five days ago.
The Blue Jays are much worse against righties and rank 18th with a .316 team wOBA. They strike out nearly 23% of the time and are a worse hitting team on the road. The increased price of Garcia is worrisome, but we can’t be picky on a slate that doesn’t have any Awesemo “A” grades. Garcia offers the strikeout upside, and his extended leash is a sign of better things to come. Garcia is a strong play in all formats, though I’d rather play him in a tournament and pay up or down in cash.

Tyler Anderson – Giants at Mariners – FanDuel $6,300, DraftKings $7,300
If I am paying all the way down at starting pitcher, it’ll be for Anderson. He just faced this same Mariners team in his last start and put up 40 FanDuel points on six innings and four strikeouts. He picked up the win and was allowed to go 100 pitches for the first time in four games. While I’m not sure it’s fair to expect a repeat performance, we were on him in his last start for a reason. The Mariners are one of the worst hitting teams in baseball, and they’re dreadful against lefties. They rank 29th of 30 teams with a .272 team wOBA while striking out 26.1% of the time. Anderson doesn’t have to be perfect to squeeze past this crew with a quality start. He’s cheap on both sites and easily my favorite value in this range.
