Shane Bieber – Indians vs. Brewers -FanDuel $11,800, DraftKings $11,000

Just another ho-hum dominant performance out of Bieber and he’s the rightful Vegas favorite to win the Cy Young Award. He’s now gone exactly six innings in three straight games with a combined 30 strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed. Bieber is striking out 14.35 batters per nine innings and has posted an elite 1.87 xFIP. He’s had his fair share of cupcake matchups but has also beat up on the Twins twice and the White Sox. Bieber does a great job of attacking batters early with his precise control and keeping his pitch count low. He’ll draw a matchup with the Brewers tonight, who are implied to score just 2.58 runs by Vegas. The Indians are the biggest favorites on the slate at -270.

The Brewers were one of the best hitting teams in baseball a year ago, but the transition to 2020 has been downright ugly. They rank 25th in baseball with a .303 team wOBA while striking out the second most at 26.5%. The heart of this order is depleted and Yelich isn’t getting much protection with Jedd Gyorko and Daniel Vogelbach following him in the order. Bieber is already striking out double digits against teams that strike out less than the Brewers, so the ceiling is huge here. A hundred pitches is a lock for Bieber, and the Indians will let him get to 115 if he’s rolling in a close game.  He’s simply the best pitcher in baseball right now, and both FanDuel and DraftKings are forcing us to pay the premium.

 Tyler Glasnow – Rays vs. Marlins-FanDuel $10,100, DraftKings $8,700

Jacob deGrom is going to get a lot of attention as the step-down pivot from Bieber, and there’s certainly no denying the upside he brings to the table. With that said, the matchup against Philadelphia isn’t great, and there’s a guy who’s even cheaper with a similar projection in  Glasnow. Glasnow has been electric in each of his last two starts and looks to be all the way back. He beat both the Yankees and Orioles in back-to-back starts with a combined 13 innings and 22 strikeouts. This is a guy who struck out nearly 12 batters per nine a season ago with an insane 2.94 xFIP. Glasnow is going to be one of the best pitchers in baseball for a long time, and he’s underrated.

The matchup is an elite one for Glasnow, and he’ll likely see at least six righties (.184 wOBA against). The Marlins are always a scrappy team to face, but that comes with the prerequisite of being bad in the first place. They rank 27th in the MLB with a .299 wOBA and strikeout over 25% of the time. They hold the second-lowest implied total on the slate at 2.86 runs, and the Rays are massive -240 favorites. While Bieber is the more consistent option, it’s hard not to fall in love with Glasnow in this matchup with the discount.

Robbie Ray – Blue Jays at Red Sox -FanDuel $7,300, DraftKings $6,600

If you’re looking to pay down, Ray is an excellent value in tournaments on both sites. I would never consider a guy with an 8.39 BB/9 in cash games, but the upside is still obvious with a 12.31 K/9. That walk rate is beyond abnormal and hard to even analyze. The hope is that the change of scenery will be a bit of a reset button for Ray, and it looks like that might be the case as he walked just one through 3.1 appearances as the primary reliever a few games ago. The matchup against the Red Sox is a middle of the road one and they strike out 23% of the time. The price is extremely low on both sites, and he allows you to pay up for whatever bats you’d like. Not all value is created equally and you need a guy with extreme upside to match the expensive starting pitchers in a tournament. Ray has the tools to put up a massive performance, but make sure any GPP exposure is money you’re comfortable throwing away.
