Top Value Plays
Max Scherzer – Nationals vs. Rays – FanDuel $11,000, DraftKings $10,400
Scherzer hasn’t been as dominant as we’ve become accustomed to, but he also hasn’t been bad at all. He’s striking out 12.67 batters per nine and has posted an elite 3.28 xFIP. The only issue has been the .365 BABIP, which will naturally fall as the sample size grows. Everything points to Scherzer bringing the same ace quality pitching that has run into some small sample size bad luck. He’ll look to get on the right track tonight against a Rays team that has gone cold plenty this season.Â
The Rays rank 12th against righties with a .309 team wOBA, but they strike out a whopping 25% of the time and don’t have much power. Scherzer is in search of a huge performance and this middling Rays order will give him every opportunity to pick one up. The Nationals need every win they can get and I would expect Scherzer to see 110 pitches if he’s rolling. He’s your SP1 in all formats on both sites, though there are some cheaper options worth considering.Â

Zach Plesac – Indians vs. Royals – FanDuel $10,300, DraftKings $7,600
The difference in Plesac from last season to this one is something to behold. In 2019, he was lifeless with a 5.06 xFIP and 6.85 K/9. Through four starts in 2020, he’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball with a 2.90 xFIP and 10.00 K/9. He’s also done so against great offenses with his two best starts coming against the White Sox (third in team wOBA). Plesac will now draw the Royals for a second consecutive start after going six innings and striking out six in a win against them just five nights ago.
The Royals rank 25th in baseball against righties with a .302 team wOBA while striking out 23.9% of the time. They don’t offer up much power in the middle of their lineup and the high ISO bats do have also strike out 26% of the time. Plesac is fairly priced on both sites (too cheap on DraftKings) and there’s no reason to expect anything other than another solid outing. The ownership won’t be over 15% with so many options on the slate and we know the Indians will let him roll past 100 pitches if he’s dealing.Â

Dinelson Lamet – Padres vs. Rockies – FanDuel $9,000, DraftKings $8,800
We love picking on the Rockies outside of Coors Field and it doesn’t take much work to see why. They rank 27th away from Coors with a .288 wOBA and 25.7% strikeout rate. Lamet hasn’t had a big performance in a few weeks, but he hasn’t had a single bad one either. He’s striking out 31% of batters and the 4.10 xFIP is sure to fall as the BABIP regulates. His price is too low on both sites and I’m a huge fan in both cash games and tournaments.Â
