UFC 257: Poirier vs McGregor 2 Post Weigh-In Analysis

Early this morning at UFC 257, we experienced some adversity. Multiple fighters missed weight, one fighter became too ill to weigh in, and one fighter was cut from the UFC. Nasrat Haqparast was too ill to compete, while his opponent Arman Tsarukyan missed weight. Ottman Azaitar made history for the wrong reason, as he violated the health-and-safety protocols of the UFC bubble in an attempt to sneak someone into his camp. The UFC took a strong stance and immediately cut Azaitar from the promotion for jeopardizing the safety of everyone. Azaitar’s opponent, Matt Frevola, was suddenly without a fight, and the UFC had to scramble. Thankfully both fights that had issues were in the same weight class. The UFC was able to salvage one fight by now pairing Tsarukyan against Frevola. What a morning it was.

Poirier vs. McGregor

Dustin Poirier looked a lot better today than he did at the press conference and looks to be in tremendous shape. Conor McGregor made a statement by making 155 pounds flat, as he shouted out “That’s championship weight!” I will say that McGregor looks a lot leaner than usual, and I wonder if he dedicated more time to cardio for this fight camp. The staredown was extremely intense, and I haven’t been this excited for a fight in a long time.

Hooker vs. Chandler

Dan Hooker made the lightweight limit while looking extremely fit and happy. Michael Chandler stepped on the UFC scale for the first time in his career and looked like a true specimen. Hooker has a massive height and reach advantage over Chandler, so we will have to see how this plays out.

Calderwood vs. Eye

Jessica Eye looked better on the scale this time around, where she has struggled in the past, and clearly wanted to make a statement. Joanne Calderwood came in looking OK, with no indication of a rough weight-cut.

Muradov vs. Sanchez

Makhmud Muradov is an absolute freak on the scale and has all of the skills to back it up. Andrew Sanchez looked flat, fatigued and relieved on the scale. He looked a lot better when he was hydrated at the staredowns.

Ribas vs. Rodriguez

Hot prospect Amanda Ribas came in in impressive shape, looking incredible. Marina Rodriguez appears to be in good shape and was relieved when she met the 116-pound limit. Both women are intense, and this fight should not disappoint.

Tsarukyan vs. Frevola

Arman Tsarukyan failed to make weight. I’ve seen Tsarukyan look a lot better on the scale, so I wonder what happened. Tsarukyan looks to be in good shape, but I did notice the fatigue on his face. Matt Frevola looks fresh and extremely intense. With all of the craziness going down today, Frevola is in for a very difficult fight.

Tavares vs. Carlos Junior

Both Brad Tavares and Antonio Carlos Junior were impressive on the scale. These gentlemen look strong for their weight class, and I can’t wait to see this fight.

McMann vs. Pena

Julianna Pena looked strong and confident on the scale, while Sarah McMann looked leaner than usual. Both women appear to be in great shape for this exciting bout.

Rountree vs. Prachnio

Marcin Prachnio is a big boy despite his lack of definition. Khalil Rountree looks strong but struggled to make weight. Rountree missed by half a pound but ultimately made weight upon his second attempt. I’m surprised to see Rountree miss on the scale. The miss is most likely due to a miscalculation with travel. Rountree did appear to be fatigued on the first try, and I can confirm the last couple pounds are the hardest to cut.

Evloev vs. Lentz

Movsar Evloev looks like a fighter who takes his career extremely seriously and always comes in looking strong for the weight class. Nik Lentz looked a little soft at the weigh-in.

Zhumagulov vs. Albazi

Both Zhalgas Zhumagulov and Amir Albazi looked to be in great shape. Albazi was the more defined fighter, but Zhalgas made up for his definition with pure intensity.
